Where in China should I go for Chinese New Year 2012?
China is relatively close to where I live and I want to go for the Year of Snake (next year). My top choices are Hong Kong, Beijing, and Shanghai. If you have an idea of where I should go, please let me know why you picked it. Thanks.

Among the various celebrations and festivities for the Chinese, Chinese New Year is always deem the most important of all. Chinese families living in different part of the country or the world will make it a point to gather together for Chinese New Year (CNY). This is very similar to the Western concept of getting together during Christmas.
Chinese New Year is also known as Lunar New Year as well as The Spring Festival. The Chinese Year is also symbolized by an animal, very much like the Western Zodiac.
Myths of Chinese New Year
There are many myths as to how Chinese New year came about.
The most common one is that in ancient China, every year, a big monster would come out during the beginning of the year and start devouring people and crops. One day, a villager suggested firing off fire crackers, bang loud gongs and fly red banner to try to frighten off the monster.

That is the best time of year to visit the stunning rice terraces in Yuanyang, Yunnan. (look on google images) because they are flooded. Make sure you go after the holidays though.

It is not really a good idea to go to China during the Chinese new year, many things are closed and the week after the new year many people are travelling, especially in the south.
Shanghai, being a commercial city is good during the new year. But you will find that many tours or entertainment are closed.
Remember Chinese New Year means people travel home.
If you are travelling around new years time but not in the week before or after then the weather will be cold.
Your best bet would be to travel from Hong Kong through Guangzhou, Guilin, Kunming and Lijiang (the southern China back packers trail). You will see and experience a lot of different things, including different cultures, foods and amazing scenery.
Though I would wait until Sprng arrives before going.
