Need help choosing a knife to carry?
I am a 5' tall woman who lives in Michigan. It is illegal here to carry a blade that is over three inches. It is also illegal to have a spring action knife. The problem is, I am terrible at getting folding knives to open up smoothly. If I am ever in a situation where I need to use a knife for protection, I am worried that I won't be able to get it open. Any suggestions?
Thanks for all the replies. I really don't trust pepper spray, I have heard it can come back at you easily. I also wear steel toed boots when I am out. I live in Ann Arbor and there have been three rapes within four days in the past week.

I carry a knife most of the time and it is almost always an illegal knife because I have the belief that I would rather be tried in court than buried. But, before I go on there are some rules. A knife is not to threaten people with. Do that and you are going to get hurt. A knife is something you use without warning and with the intent to do serious harm. Unless you need it a knife should never be shown, NEVER! Second is that a knife, while a serious weapon, is not all that easy to use effectively. make sure you have a good teacher and practice before you try to use it.
Now, contrary to popular belief, the length of the knife is not all that important because you slash with it instead of stabbing. For that reason you want a nice, clean straight edge honed to razor sharpness. No serrations that can get hung upon things. I personally prefer a double edged knife because that's how I am trained. That does not mean it is the best for you. You do want one with a solid grip that will not get slippery with sweat or blood. It should be a good size to carry concealed on your person. I like mine sideways at the small of my back.
Unless you are prepared to hurt somebody seriously do not even think about carrying a knife. Unless you can really consider slashing somebodies face open all the way to the bone you have no business with this weapon. Get pepper spray instead.

I would highly recommend mace or pepper spray instead of a knife. No offense, but a 5' lady carrying a 3 inch blade can easily be overtaken by 1 or more males who are 6'+, etc. Once you get hit with pepper spray in the face, I cannot see anyone still trying to harm you.

Hi..
In Michigan blades have to be under 3" if carried concealed.
A spring action mechanism would be OK.. Even a 3" blade can offer you some protection

Buy some pepper spray ! Do you really think some thug is going to let a 5' woman stab him ? If you're attacked you're not going to have time to open a knife !

You can use a guided open knife. It opens with the flip of a lever which is attached to the blade. It is not spring nor gravity activated and is perfectly legal.

Check out small knifes that come with a "neck sheath". You can hang it around your neck, it has a fixed blade that hangs from a small sheath (holster). It can be concealed under the shirt. No need to open anything, just pull it out. There are more out there but here is an example:

Wow Michigan yep that's a big boomin crime area, I would have at first suggested the U.S.M.C KA-BAR, but since it can't be over three inches I would the suggested the mini KA-BAR, theirs different variants but look up mini KA-BAR folding knife and it will show up. Good Luck .

Well i don't know if it is any different in America, but over here in England, it is illegal to carry a weapon such as a knife, and we would get it confiscated if found and sometimes even arrested x
