What is the best vehicle for East africa - if fuel economy and purchase price is a concern?
Specifically Kenya - Tanzania and Uganda. Given the main roads are mostly tarmac, sometimes a bit bumpy, but with lots of dirt tracks and gravel and "tarram" of the main roads, what is a good vechicle to buy? Although a Landcruiser would be great for go anywhere vehicle - I don't really want to shell out £20,000/$30,000 that a 2000 model will cost over there (import taxes add about 100% to the cost of the car). I would be interested to know from people who live there, if driving a regular 2 wheel drive can struggle - say getting home to from the main road to your house when its wet, or visiting game parks in the rainy season, and whether a smaller 4x4 like an X-Trail/RAV4/CR-V would be more sensible. These are half the price of a Landcruiser and do nearly twice the distance on the same amount of fuel. Are there many places to get them serviced over there? I'll be living in Kenya but visiting nearby countries for vacations. My biggest issue is getting onto a game reserve - where my other half works. Will an X-Trail be up to it (I've read too much bad stuff on Landrover reliabilty to risk one). Alternative vechicle suggestions appreciated. Budget upto £10,000 ($15,000) including import taxes. Also like to hear from folks in other countries who use their vehicles off road and who have proper wildnerness which we don't have in the UK. Oz and USA seem to be fond of driving off the main roads.

You do not really have the luxury of having " fuel economy and purchase price" being a concern....things break unexpectedly, so the ONLY sensible choice for a vehicle in Kenya, Tanzania & Uganda would be a vehicle you can get PARTS for there, and that there might be someone who knows how to work on it!
So you'll be looking for a Toyota pick-up truck...
