Is "Super Trouper" by ABBA a good song to audition with?

A Broadway song must be sung for auditions...not sure if Super Trouper is in Mamma Mia or not. Thank you..

First, to answer your question, Super Trouper is a great song and it is included in the Mamma Mia! soundtrack.

The others are right, ABBA was a quartet and most of their songs were written with multiple voice tracks. However there are several songs that are substantially solos. Super Trouper is one woman's story, about a performer who has grown to hate the road and the stage (Super Troupers are are a kind of spotlight) and is only waiting for her loved one to come and make her feel whole again. It was really Agnetha Faltskog's story. (She's the blonde soprano in ABBA.) She grew to hate touring and being away from her kids and she lived for the times they could be with her. But the lead on the song is Frida Lyngstad, the redheaded mezzo soprano. I think you could do the song as a solo and probably as a soulful ballad, but it would sound very different without the backing vocals. Other ABBA songs that were largely solos include Thank You for the Music, When All is Said and Done, The Winner Takes it All, The Day Before You Came, Head Over Heels and a few others.

I have to agree with Empty.

This is not a one person song. Most of ABBA's were harmonious songs not to be done by a single person.

If you are auditioning for a Broadway style production, try choosing a song that showcases you singing style. If you are a quiet singer then go for the simple, "Send in the Clowns" type song.

If you can belt it out, go for a "Don't rain on my parade" type song.

    Break a leg.

No - apart from anything else, it is effectively a duet - one singer cannot recreate the song as it has two lead lines.

No, you need a friend to sing it, it is a duet. By all other means, it is a wonderful song.

  • No, it won't sound right with one singer.
