Am I feeding my guinea pigs too much?
Hi Guys,
I have 2 female guinea pigs and I am worried that I am feeding them too much, I give them approx 2 handfuls of pellets per day and unlimited hay.
About 6pm I give them their veggies which consists of 1 of the following:
Handful of spinach and some parsley or
2 cherry tomatoes and half a pepper or
2 Brocolli florets and 2 cauliflower florets or
Half a carrot and handful of lambs lettuce.
Sometimes the also get cucumber as a treat if its warm.
They are both approx 26 weeks old.
Thanks

Feed your guinea pigs ad follows, this is for one guinea pig:
Unlimited guinea pig pellets that are 18% protein with a high amount of Vitamin C and no nuts seeds or other colored stuff in it.
Unlimited hay up to 7 months of age, pregnant or nursing it should be alfalfa as it is higher in protein and calcium and will help them through their growth spurt, the development of the pups and the production of milk. After 6 months of age change them to timothy hay, orchard grass or any good grass hay you can find at your local Feed and Seed store as it is cheaper and of a much better quality.
1/2 to 1 cup of dark green leafy veggies daily such as kale dandelion greens, spinach, Swiss Chard, romaine lettuce, parsley, red and green bell peppers. Brocolli and Cauliflower are a fair source of C however, they do tend to give your guinea pigs gas.
Fruit should only be given every 3 days as it is to high is sugar and is not good for your guinea pig also it is high in acid and if fed daily will cause sores in their mouth. Carrots are also very high in sugar so do not give more than one baby carrot or 1/2 inch of a normal carrot daily.
Change the water daily to assure they are drinking ample water.

NO way. As Justified mentioned. Guinea pigs are herbivores. NO dairy products in any respect. i understand they sell yogurt drops for pigs in puppy shops, yet they are no longer secure. Use some sprigs of parsley or cilantro for treats. and hear Justified's different nutrition suggestion.

You are right about feeding them unlimited hay but the rule i use is as follows
1/4 cup of pellets per guinea pig per day
3/4 cup of mixed veggies per guinea pig per day
try not to feed them lettuce as it causes diarrhea.
Keep up the variety in veggies! guinea pigs love it!

It sounds ok... I feed my males about the same amount of food everyday, but if the two start getting fat then maybe cut down!

Thats absolutely fine :) if you ever do decide to cut down their food, do not cut down the veggies! :) x
