Do those external fans really work (PS3)?

I have an old 60 gig system and it suffered the YLOD from overheating. I managed to fix it myself and I don't want it to overheat again. I had bought a 3rd party external fan for it years ago that snaps over the back vent.

Ebay also has the kind that plugs into the front USB and blows into the front vents.

My question is, do these really work? Will they protect my PS3 from overheating again or are they just junk?

They do more damage than they help. I hear they keep the heat sensor cool but not the rest of the console, so the internal fan doesn't ever increase in speed. And once it does start to overheat, it won't automatically shut off like it's supposed. They also draw more air through your PS3, so dust collects inside very quickly.
