Can someone explain how my statue exploded?

Several years ago, my mom and I were in the dining room and we heard an explosion in the other room. We went to the room to find my mom's buddist statue (appx 6-12 inches tall) in pieces. Now my mom believes it was some spirit, and some might believe so, but I'm looking for a more scientific reason as I remember reading a while back about how decaying can make certain things explode over time (or so I remember). I don't exactly know what it was made of, probably some time of hard clay. Does anyone have a scientific explanation to this?

Update:

I don't think there was any extreme change in temperature nor any sort of candles or flames near the statue.

Update 2:

The statue was probably made out of clay and the statue was probably less than 10 years old. We aren't sure this was years and years ago

Update 3:

I guess if anyone could answer if any type of material can explode without any contact and how it happens would help as well

There's some key information missing, particularly what the statue was made of. Also, how old was it?

Edit: If the statue was fired unevenly, there would be residual stresses in it. Over time, cracks could start to propegate in the statue, leading to eventual runaway crack propegation. This would probably happen when the statue was in the process of heating up or cooling down, ie, in the morning or in the evening.

What material is it made out of? Did anything bump into it/did it fall? Probably made out of something flammable but i've never seen exploding statues
