Who do you call an artist?
What makes you call someone "an artist"?! or what is it exactly that separates an ordinary person from an Artist? of course their priorities, but what else? for instance, i define an intellectual as someone naughtier than the crowd in a meaningful way. but what about an artist? it must have something to do with the senses, no?
additional Q: Who do you call "original" among artists?
thank you.
Blue, thank you for a wonderful answer.. you are talking about devotional service. but what about the senses?!... in devotional service there is a give and take by the senses. there is bliss. is bliss something that is missing in art? you think?
Alexandra Flores: is there a relationship between your answer and how a person born in a poor family appreciates the world around him/her better?! there is a wonderful story made in to play about a yogi and a cobbler. the yogi does it the austere way, but the cobbler in a joyful way. an artist must be on a cobbler side. that's why many strict followers of austerity don't like to dance, or don't like the music etc.. no?!
Gojuryu, Armchair speculators lack humor. they are boring. but the intellectuals should not. um?! an intellectual to me is connected to the society he/she lives in, unlike a scientist who may not be.
Tigger, no artist outside the USA, ei?! have Romans had us believe that or is that real?!

Try Cassie Premo Steele (poet). Original.
Or David Bowie (early stuff)
Bob Dylan
More poets:
Thomas Hardy
Shelly, Keats, Lamb
Samuel T Coleridge
Thomas Gray
Shakespeare
Gerard Manley Hopkins
John Donne
John Berryman
Walt Whitman
Painting:
Vincent Van Gogh
(I have a friend who in the past has been artist of a sort, but I'll pass by that one quickly.)
Maths/Science/Art often go together: Leonardo Davinci, Escher
And there is the great artistry that we see all around.
The artist is creative either naturally or by developing creativity. Anyone can do that, if they break out of the box. The artist engages with something that is deeper in the mind or inspirational and expresses it in such a way that the audience and/or themselves is engaged with it in their way in their minds and are inspired by it. Brings hidden aspects of reality to the surface. Captures moments of memory that keep understandings awareness that can be reinvoked and recaptured and merged into a new moment. May record secrets there in codes that are revealed to some and remain hidden to others. Dances with his dreams and let's them flow. Brings the dreams into being to touch the dreams of others and let them come to life. The dreams interweaving and inspiring new creation. Just as the magician casts a spell through his being, that runs on and transforms all it touches. The priority is a kind of romance to bring people out of their shells into a fuller world of beauty, when maybe they feel the shell is shut and that it is not there, or snake charming. Sometimes an artist may record prophetic visions in the work when something is to come forth, or blend the future and the past together. Shaping optimism and sharing healing pathways that come out of dreams.

Artists are people who create things. Most people will only call it a true artist if they like what it creates, but really, anyone who uses their creativity to create things is practicing art. On some levels, this might make everyone an artist, but the term is typically reserved for the best among those who create, or whose works of art are the most popular or renowned.
Something is original when it is least similar to things which exist or have existed.

An artist can be considered as someone with the talent to draw or create. Though there are all type of artists out there that do all kinds of things. The difference though is a true artist finds inspiration and originality from the simplest things. A artist is a true artist when he/she can get inspired from a toothpick, or a pebble.
additional Q: Who do you call "original" among artists?
answer: I call Original among artist someone who grows and creates out of steam. Someone who doesn't need all the tools in the world, because they have their imagination. An original artist stands out of a crowd because he or she is not afraid to be different.

An artist is astute person who can express thought, emotions or ideas through a media that others may see and appreciate the concept. Media can be but not limited to words, music, graphics, wood, plants, glass, metal, sand, clay, stone, paper, photography, fabric, dance, acting, comedy etc.
I call them an artist when they capture my attention to want to see their work, when they draw an audience or when others willfully pay for their services or production(s).
Yes it does have to do with the senses and emotions.
Original implies the first production of something or the first to develop the means or media to relate or the concept.
Source(s): You have a number of fans who I feel are artist. - Anonymous10 years ago
An artist is someone who can bring his own imagination to life backed up by creativity and passion. An artist creates a masterpiece once his hands, heart, mind and soul converge. His masterpiece is his labor of love. His art is like that of a child nurtured inside the womb of a woman, fragile and delicate, like the flowers in full bloom that captivate. An artist is someone who wakes up in the middle of the night to tend the calling of his desires to create and cogitate.

I agree. Something has to be produced, whatever the medium used, images, writings, or articles, entertainment in any form.
I personally, produce ornamental ironwork. For a commision I would asses the space, then make scetches and finally form the hot iron and join it together.
Anyone who produces something from the heart, I would consider original
I was confused by your use of "naughty" as a description of intellectuals. Most of the ones I know do nothing but talk. Most of it boring. The rarely listen, as they consider most others inferior.
Naughtiness suggests fun and humour, something intellectuals sadly lack. lol.

It is when such a person finds their way back to their zone, groove or flow, that positive but unsatisfiable need to beautify, to symbolize or acknowledge in a concrete tangible way.

Originating artists do not copy to produce their works product, so their product is described as 'original' from the word 'origin', synonym word 'source'.
