How much is enough to save out for vet?
Time and again I see people saying things like if you can't afford the vet you can't afford the horse. I am curious. How much money would you have available for a horse emergency? Have you ever been faced with a horse emergency that would drain you in one fell swoop?

Yes. I have had that sort of emergency
The people who say " if you cant afford the vet, you should get rid of the horse" have never lived in the real world. There are times and circumstances that leave a normally financially sound person scrambling. Especially lately with all the economic ups and downs.
I was comfortable financially, had my home, had my cats, a dog, and my horse. Paid my bills, had spare money for play or what I needed.
The barn and field I leased sat on a quiet road. There is NO way to plan for a drunk idiot to come down a road. Through the fence. Through the run in and to clip a horse sleeping near by at night. 3 am I get a phone call from the state police. My horse is injured.. My barn is destroyed, one of the other horses is loose somewhere... And the idiot in the car is so out of it he still has no idea what he has done. The Vet bill was in the thousands of dollars. The drunk Jack *** had no car insurance. was 18 and had nothing of value to sue for. So I was stuck paying bills.
Now I said I am comfortable, but I don't and didn't keep double digits of thousands of dollars on hand for an emergency. Its just not feasible But thankfully my vet took payments and eventually a Judge ordered the fool to pay me $200 every two weeks towards the bills or he would go to jail.
I keep $500 around for the odd emergency, but beyond that its called having a good long term relationship with a vet so you can make payments.

"could a vet shop a canines devoid of charge?" probable no longer. "-and the relatives did no longer have the money for - yet basically merely via slightly?" If the relatives has the vast majority of the charge for centers rendered then definite, the relatives could pay the vast majority of the charge and sign a criminal record to pay the stability interior of a on an identical time agreed upon date. Vets do no longer paintings for loose. Vets are not getting their anesthesia, X ray machines, team, drugs, sutures, bandages, lease, malpractice, computers, printers, electric powered expenses, gas expenses and each and each of something for loose. For some reason a lot of human beings think of that their vet ought to pay or subsidize their animals wellness care. Vets are no longer obligated to take charge plans and maximum have indications interior the waiting room declaring that charge in finished is due on the time provider is rendered. some vets and their team will state on the telephone devoid of having been asked that they do no longer do money and settle for Visa, credit card, come across. i've got not got a topic with vets who won't do money. i think of that is unfair for persons to anticipate the vet to subsidize what's their duty. I do have a topic with vets who won't do money for emergencies wherein the owner has a minimum of 50% of the bill the two in money or credit and is keen to pay the stability over a on an identical time agreed upon volume of time.

Vet bills can range hugely on what the problem is. They can easily rack up to $5,000 or more for surgery, having the vet out, treatment, etc. If you want to save money for the vet, I would say at least $2,000 for each horse.

Okay so this is what we do with our horse.
We have little 'slots'. And in each of those slots there's money for different reasons.
Like we have it for boarding, vet, chiropractor, feed, tack, farrier, and dentist.
Like for example for boarding for me it coast 200 monthly. So every year we put in 2,400 in that slot for the year, that way we don't worry about paying for board, we already have it.
Then we put in for the other stuff.
And then we have our 'emergency' slot. We put in a lot of money in that. And thats for if my horse gets in an accident and we have to get extra money. And even if there's not enough in the 'emergency' slot we will still get more, even if its thousands.
Really with horses. You should be able to afford anything. Whether its 25k in vet bills, or just 100 in boarding. You should always have the appropriate amount of money that you need for a horse. If you can't pay for an emergency, then why have a horse? It would be suffering and you won't be able to give it the proper care it needs. Because one day you can put a horse in the pasture, the next hour it could run around, slip, and break a leg. You have to be ready for things like that. Thats why when people want to buy a horse I always ask them "well would you be ready to spend 10k in a day if something major happened to your horse?" and yes people that does happen, and it isn't pretty AT ALL.
But those are just examples of what could happen. You could have a horse get injured in the pasture and have it only be $50. You see what I mean?
So anything can happen with horses.
-hope that gives you an idea.

get insurance on your horse and that will usually cover colic surgery, which can end up being several thousand dollars.
