  • Has anyone else seen the new trend in pointing toes OUT in WP?

I have attended a few 4-H trainings in northern MN this year and a few shows and have observed what to me is an alarming trend. The instructors are actually teaching the kids to point their toes OUT! Like a duck! I asked the reasoning and was told it was so they could get better contact with their calves and if the horse was spur trained, to have better contact with their spurs.

As a former gamer, I can see a potential downside to this trend. Anyone who rides games with toes out will be hitting barrels, poles and knocking them over. Also, I wonder about the safety of having toes out. For example- if two riders pass closely in opposite directions, they are going to get their feet hit, possibly twisted backwards, and hurt.

I don't know if I agree with this idea. What are your thoughts on having toes pointed out ?

  • How much is enough to save out for vet?

Time and again I see people saying things like if you can't afford the vet you can't afford the horse. I am curious. How much money would you have available for a horse emergency? Have you ever been faced with a horse emergency that would drain you in one fell swoop?

  • What are some odd horse treatments/cures you have heard of?

I just read about someone who has fed tobacco to his horse and heard of it being used as a wormer. Most answers called him a troll. Actually, it was used as a wormer by many old timers.

    http://www.horsetalk.co.nz/worming/wormingagents.s...

My grandfather and father told me about it. I have also heard of using kreosote to kill warts. My own dad used to cover them with it and it did work. I am curious, what are some of the old time cures/treatments you have heard of?

  • Western Show Shirts-are mandarin collars ok?

I am making show shirts for people who show WP and my design would look better if the collar were a stand up style, like a mandarin collar. Are they okay to have or are they totally out of style?

  • Anyone ever use Fly Predators?

I have been seeing a lot of ads for these little bugs and am wondering how they do. Do they get rid of flies as promised and what about the whole idea of bringing in another bug to an existing ecosystem? The DNR in our area brought in green bugs a few years ago to get rid of army worms. The next years we had tons of green bugs on everything. I am concerned that something similar could happen with these little fly eaters. I searched the website, but saw nothing about environmental impact on there.

    Anyone have any experience?

  • How long would you pour money into your ailing horse?

Over and over I read posts saying that if you cannot afford your horse's medical care, you should not own it and other related comments.. So, say you have a horse with a mysterious condition that won't improve and you have consulted vet after vet; each at an added expense. How long would you continue to shell out money to save your horse?

I am sure you want a 'for instance', so say your horse keeps going lame and has repeated abscesses, then goes lame in the opposite foot for a while, then back to the original foot. How long would you go?

  • What would you do if this were your horse?

My mare had a terrible abscess 2 yrs ago. It ruptured at the coronary band and ripped open half her hoof. It eventually grew down and half the hoof came off. It took an entire year for a new hoof to grow in. She has had corrective shoes on throughout the ordeal to hold her hoof together. She has continued to have smaller abscesses ever since. She has good days and then she gets another abscess. Her hoof wall is now completely healed and her sole looks good.

My question is, do you think it is possible that all these smaller abscesses are still debris working its way out or has she developed a chronic condition that will never stop? I have discussed my options with my vet and we will be x-raying on his next visit to see if there is something going on inside. If the bones are now damaged, I know I will have to put her down. But has anyone else ever had something similar happen and how did it turn out? I don't want to give up on her too soon if there is still hope.

  • Western fun show class ideas?

I am organizing this year's fun show for our club. It is the final day of the fair and we always do about 10-12 play classes so everyone can have some fun and get their horses out of the barn for some exercise. I need fun ideas for big and little people. Some fast and some slow classes. I have my ideas, but am open to fresh ones. What do you like to do at a fun show?

  • Horse tries flipping over....What to do?

My horse has a history of flipping over backwards if saddled too fast. So I have always done it slowly and have not had a problem in 10 years. Today I had a substitute farrier work on her (because my farrier was injured and is in the hospital indefinitely). He was timid about picking her feet up and she read him like a book. The next thing I know she is rearing and trying to go over. So I took her out of the barn and made her move her feet as in showmanship. Then we tried again. Same thing, this time, she went higher, So I repeated the move your feet routine. Eventually, I put a leadrope with a chain on it under her nose, then over. Nothing seemed to be working and he finally gave up. Now my mare, who has been recovering from 2 yrs of losing her hoof to abcesses, is standing out in the pasture without any shoes and her feet are at bad angles. I am very concerned that the next person who tries to work on her feet will have an even worse time because she won this time.

What can I do to help get past this episode? She never flipped for my regular farrier. Do I work on making her stand while I pick up her feet and tap them with a small hammer, or what? Any ideas?

and no, my regular farrier won't be back this year.

  • How is the oil changed on a 1995 honda Goldwing 1500?

I recently bought a 95 goldwing trike and it did not come with an owner's manual. I found the oil fill and the dip stick, now where's the drain plug? I am guessing very near there, only underneath the bike. But don't want to drain the wrong thing. Can any honda owners help?

Those of you sending the Nike ad trash, need not reply.

  • Fun Show, I need prize ideas...?

I am organizing a fun show in August and would like some inexpensive and fun prize ideas that the riders would like and get a kick out of. They can be nice or spoofy. ie- one year our committee made "trophies" out of poop glued and spray painted to a small block of wood. Off beat, but everyone got a kick out of watching the winners flee from their "prizes"!

So Can ya help me out here?

    Thanks!
