Is it stupid to buy a car before you have a license?

I just want a car so bad and I have the money to buy one. Everyone my age has a car and it makes me feel like the biggest loser getting rides from my parents everywhere, it makes people think I'm even bigger of a loser. My parents were saying I could get a car when I had the money they even looked at cars with me, but now they are saying don't get one.

They keep yelling at me to get a license first, but I can't get a license unless someone teaches me how to drive, and I can't learn how to drive from them (my parents) because they don't have a car themselves. Wouldn't me buying a car benefit everyone? Is it really that stupid to buy a car before I have a license? I just want my independence so badly and my parents are trying to make me miserable and dependent by forcing me to get rides from them and making me take the bus.

Update:

My parents car didn't pass inspection, they've been driving it around illegally.

Update 2:

My parents have a car with a failed inspection that they drive illegally.

Yes, it is VERY stupid. You can't drive the car without a license and proper insurance. You may have enough money to buy the car, but do you have enough money to pay for the insurance and maintenance on the car? Insurance for teens is VERY expensive.

Relax, not every teen has a car.

Well it's not necessarily stupid just doesn't make a lot of sense. But you won't be able to learn how to drive until you have a government permission slip (license) first.

My advice, a stranger on the internet, buy a car now, have a friend drive it to a parking lot or something and practice there. Don't drive on the streets without a permit or license since the cops like to steal money from you if you do.

Good luck. Just remember that your parents are still providing for you so keep them in the loop and be respectful about your decisions.

I understand your desire to get ahead of the game, but let's look at the bigger picture here.

Getting your license will involve taking a Driver's Ed course and getting some behind-the-wheel time. A key part to getting that BTW time is having someone in the passenger seat who already has a Driver's License. In some states, that person must be over 25 and have been driving for a certain number of years to be qualified (you'll want to check the laws in your state to be clear on them).

In addition, as soon as you buy a car, you must also start paying for auto insurance, not to mention gas, oil changes, new tires, repairs, and all the recurring incidentals a car requires.

You say at the end that your parents are forcing you to get rides from them, but just a few sentences earlier you said they don't have licenses or a car themselves. How are they able to give you rides to places if they don't have a car themselves?

If you have the money to buy a new car why don't you buy a new car for the whole family. Then your parents can drive the car around till you get your license.

You could hire a driving instructor that supplies the car. You should wait till you have your license before buying the car otherwise your family will control it and no guarantees you'll get to do the things you want.

Get a license first. I think you owning a car would be too much of a temptation to drive it.

you can't register the car and get insurance without a license.

So license first. Go take the written test and get a permit.

practice with friend or Uncle joe who has a car.

    then go take test.

celebrate by buying a car. Enjoy!

Add up what the car will really cost. Purchase and insurance and gas and maintenance. It's a lot of money. Is it really worth that much? Then buy it.

yes it is a big expense with insurance and high risk if some one drives it and gets a ticket you as the owner are responsible, plus high maintenance costs if it is a used car

    Go get money first.

Go get a driving school lessons to learn driving.

    Go get a license.

    Go get a car.

STOP dreaming if you can't get those first.
