I didn't know her name and I'll never forget her and I bet that not one in ten thousand could say, 'My first was a Gypsy Girl..!' Ha..!
I was seven going on for eight years old. This was my 2nd year as an Evacuee, on a farm in Leicestershire, O.K..? From the farm, a single strip of road led down into the village, 3 miles away and to the Village School. On one side of the road were the rolling fields belonging to the farm and on the other side, a forest with a path I knew running through it, to the Manor House and the Squire.
One day (maybe I should have said, Once Upon a Time..) I came along the road to find a small Gypsy encampment. A caravan painted a dull yellow and a couple of horses tethered under the trees. The Gypsy family were sitting beside a fire, over which they were all roasting a sausage on a stick.
I saw the mother nudge the little girl and whisper something in her ear. The little girl got up and came to me and said, 'you wanna roast a sausage..' I smiled delightedly and joined them by the fire. I duly roasted the offering the man gave me, in a whittled stick and then the little girl ordered me up and into the woods to play.
We climbed trees. Watched an ant's nest. Saw a red squirrel, then a hedgehog. She held my hand and whispered thunderously in my ear, 'give us a kiss..!' She had jet-black hair and green eyes like grape clusters. Her hair smelled of wood-smoke and she was the softest kiss.
Games over, we came back to the caravan and the lady said, 'Tell the Missus that we're here and does she want any knives sharpening..?' I raced home and told Mrs Heelband and she sent me scampering back to invite them to come.
The Man brought a wheelbarrow which more like a mobile workshop and he sharpened knives, mended pots and pans, used his soldering iron and His Lady sold us a huge bunch of artificial flowers. Mrs.H paid them a few shillings and gave them a plump hen and a suckling pig. They were annual visitors and always welcome.
I played with the little girl for five more days and then, one day, they were gone. Last time I saw her she was crouching down by our five-bar front gate, writing something with chalk on the gate-post. I asked her what the sign meant and she said briefly, 'It means good people live here.'
Five days with a green--eyed gypsy girl in 1943 and it's a century later and I've never forgotten her.
I wonder what her name was.....

My third grade sweetheart M----.
Who I am now very worried about because just for fun I recently looked her up on the internet and lo and behold there she was right at the top of the list of all the other people in the world with the same name because it turns out she is newsworthy due to receiving an experimental medical procedure for a rare illness that is threatening her life.

A neighbor and classmate by the name of Patty Downing. Man, were the hormones ever raging back then ! They've calmed down a little bit since then, but they're still somewhat out of control.

I was 6 ,she was 5, and her name was Shirley. I still remember her fondly, but as it was 1935 i think she may have forgotten me.She was the only young child living near us and therefor my only playmate. We were great friends until i moved away at age12 and i have never seen her since. She asked her mum if we could marry when she was about 9 and mum said we could not think about that until we were 14.and Shirley cried. She said that was years away we might die before then.I do hope she was as lucky as i was,i married at 21, and had 57 very happy years with my wife until she was taken with cancer.
