So what exactly happens if more people vote "No" than "Yes" on August 1st?

So if you don't know by now on August 1st the people of Nassau County up in New York will be taking a vote on a referendum for taxpayer funding for a new arena for the New York Islanders on August 1. If more people vote "Yes" they obviously get a new arena.

What happens if more people vote "No"? Are we talking relocation outside of the Long Island area? Are we talking 10 more dismal years in The Coliseum? Are we talking a relocation in Suffolk County on Long Island? What exactly will happen?

Bill and Tomjc make compelling cases...both have more than a kernel of truth.

On the one hand, the NY Metropolitan area is, on the face of things, too big to just bail out of (NYI make no small amount of money on local cable dollars because of the area's socio-economics).

However, Nassau Coliseum is old and isn't getting younger. Old buildings become progressively more expensive to maintain.

The Lighthouse project was seen as the "save" for the franchise. Tom is right- Maple Leaf Square, in all its gaudy monstrosity, makes money

If the measure doesn't pass, then Charles Wang has to make some difficult decisions. Would a Brooklyn arena-share with the NJ Nets make sense? Or somewhere in the Connecticut suburbs (i.e. Stamford). Or is he on the blower with Bettman, saying "I'm out"? At that point, all bets are off.

Kansas City? Other than an arena, not much else to offer.

    Quebec? No arena, no owner.

If there's a "Door Number Four", not sure where.

Then the Islanders will get in line with the Coyotes, the Panthers, the Blue Jackets and the Predators wishing that there were more than one Quebec City.

The only hope for the Islanders is that Wang finds another revenue stream. The Lighthouse Project was this. In the big picture the arena is a small part of the project. Similar in concept to Maple Leaf Square in Toronto the project will dwarf the arena as a money maker for the owner of the team. Much in the same manner as Maple Leaf Square.

First off, NO they will NOT relocate. If they leave the island, then they would likely go under because they would be to close to the rangers and devils. If the people vote "No" then they would be in the same spot as the Red Wings (trying to find a different way to get a new arena). But I personally think that the people will vote "Yes", because New York's economy is pretty good compared to most states.

I think they'll hook up with the Nets and agree to pay for use of the new arena in Brooklyn. I don't think they'll let the geographic nickname stop them from playing on the mainland. Outside of that, perhaps some arrangement with the Rangers could be made. I cannot imagine them leaving the largest television market in the States.

then the Islanders are screwed. if the vote passes, the county legislation just needs to pass it. the county has the money for it, only all of it is going towards the police officers

Seems like people on here are thinking a move. I love hockey but I wouldn't vote to raise my taxes to get a new arena.

Long Island will definitely be out of the question. My best guess is that it will be either in Brooklyn in the soon to be opened Barclays stadium or in Queens.

  • charles wang states he will activly persure moving the islanders out of NY all together if they dont approve the new arena he wants to open his mega arena and will do anything to get it including relocation i remember laying low talking about it when he used to get on here
