So out of those of you who are against using a Ouija, how many have actually had bad experiences?
So, we know that I know that you know that I know that the Ouija board is just a toy. But I always see people on here railing against it. Now, you folks who believe this thing can actually conjure spooks and demons and the soul of John Ritter and Abe Lincoln, have you personally had negative experiences with it that make you say these things, or is it mere conjecture based on hearsay of other people telling you scare stories, etc.?
I seriously can't believe a large amount of people over, say, the age of 14 believe this toy works. Again, I'll say if even a fraction of the bunk you hear about the Ouija were true, a) they would stop selling them, b) they'd be outlawed outright c) we'd have a serious problem with consumer products suddenly being able to channel the dead.
Now think about that for a moment. Let it sink in. Why does it specifically have to be a Ouija? Why couldn't it be an Easy Bake oven or your Xbox or Etch A Sketch? What if tomorrow Hasbro said, "OK from here on out all of the Operation games are also going to be able to double as a Ouija board, asking questions with the forceps and light up nose and buzzer." You would think that was bonkers, right?
Or would you?

FINALLY! Where have you been all my life! lol
You have explained this very well, and I appreciate it. (The forceps a light up nose and buzzer were priceless!)
I would imagine that you are not going to get many answers....but then you knew that there weren't all those people out there with personal experience anyway! I've said on here somewhere that if someone says the word 'ouija' you should stop them immediately and clarify that this is a legitimate, first hand experience ... not 'someone told me' or 'I heard' (hearsay is not allowed in court for a good reason) and not a person witnessing some benign activity and going right off the deep end to 'demons' and 'evil spirits' and 'omg call an exorcist'
THANKS! ;)

Hey Handy. I know our opinions are like night and day, but I'm taking a stab at this, and I'll give ya a good laugh. I know it's sold as a toy, and for whatever reason, I cannot fathom WHY it's still around. The toys you mentioned are just that, toys, you don't conjure up spirits for communication, and this is what makes the ouija different. I feel the same about people dabbling with EVPs and such when they're just playing around with them. It actually has everything to do with opening yourself up to communication, hoping to communicate with a ghost, well, there's demons out there, although you evidently don't believe in those either.
My experience with playing it. Our house was haunted, got the board thinking it would be fun to try to communicate with the ghosts. I was old enough to know that it WAS just a toy, not more useful than a toy doctor kit, but it did sound intriguing. The planchette never moved, knocking out the ideomotor effect. It didn't move at all. We asked all kinds of questions. So, I was right, it was no more useful than a toy doctor kit. It wasn't long after that, maybe hours later, things in the house changed significantly. It was just downright scary to be in there. It wasn't actually that anything was happening, just felt scary. Although the house was haunted before, it wasn't really scary, we were used to it. This changed everything. Then the growling started. You could be walking down the hall and a growl would be right behind you, at head level. These aren't growls that any animal, not even a bear could make, much less a huge dog, it was very different. Then came the stenches out of nowhere, then it would disappear. It wasn't the smell like a dead body, although just as distinctive and powerful. Neither of those happened prior to us playing the game. We felt fear, like impending doom. Our mom called a priest to come bless the house, it got much, much worse after that. We then added to the fear, increasing growls, and stenches. Now we got to the point that nobody wanted to be alone in the house, we'd congregate in one room for there's safety in numbers, right? Wrong. We could sit in the living room, and although we weren't huddled together, we were in the same room. Something would fly off a table or the wall, across the room, with a lot of force, sometimes narrowly missing someone. My father was VERY far from a saint before this, but when all this started, he turned into quite the monster. The abuse got much worse and he was forever threatening our lives and would always remind us that our bodies would never be found. Aside from cuts/scratches, etc, demons will turn your entire world upside down. After the house blessing made everything so much worse (any, I'm limited, so I cannot list ALL that happened after playing), we were too fearful to have the priest back again, couldn't imagine how it could possibly get any worse. So THIS is why I'm so against that "game". We did have a bad experience.
I'm 47, so I fall into your loser category there. But, I'm about as sane as they come. I'm far too old and mature to come onto here and belt out tall tales. I'd like to add that I'm the least creative person on this earth, so making up a story is beyond my capabilities. I'm here to try to help those who have and are going through some of the things I have. Do I believe in ghosts and demons? You bet I do, I've lived with them. Do I believe that the ouija board brings trouble? Absolutely!

Hello.
I recognize you from around Yahoo.
Before I share with you, I'd like to first point out your statement, if a fraction of the "bunk" which I'm guessing is, stories or danger... of the Ouija board was true, they would stop selling them and they'd be outlawed. Woah! Well, I see alcohol legally for sale, that is responsible for the death of many, and proven harmful with over consumption. Still selling. Not outlawed. I also see cigarettes for sale, that are clearly harmful and dangerous to the body, and have killed many. Still selling. Not outlawed. As well as knives, guns, etc. They are sold to bring in money. It's up to you if you purchase something harmful, and what you do with it. The only reason the Ouija board doesn't have an age restriction is because of the material it is made out of. It's not a weapon, and it's not consumed. Hell, even a child can purchase a knife now days anyways. Anyhow.
I've told my story many times of how my life spiraled down-hill after using the Ouija board, but it wasn't just a "regular" crisis. My personality was completely... hindered. I stopped eating, became severely anorexic and close to death, didn't talk to anyone or leave my room for months, chopped off most of my hair, didn't even look in a mirror for a long, long time. It wasn't even that I was depressed. I didn't feel like myself at all. I would stare at my bedroom walls for about two days at a time with no food. The weirdest part, is what happened over a stretch of months, I only remember what feels like two weeks.
Now, it's arguable that I randomly happened to fall into mental illness. However, it went away almost overnight one day. And my body is still very damaged. It was just very, very, very unlike me.
DURING the Ouija board experience though, my arm became really, really hot. It was practically burning and there was a red patch. That never happened to me... so that was weird. The plastic piece we were using moved on its own when we lifted our fingers, too. So we couldn't argue that one of us was moving it.
People in my family have had worse experiences (not long-term like mine though). Also interesting ones. My cousin who is now 28 and has four kids, asked it when she was 14, who she would be with when she grows up. It spelt out "Ben." She didn't know anyone named Ben until three years later. She now has four kids with him. Subconscious? Hmm... how the hell did her subconscious know that? Coincidence? Maybe. But what are the odds of it guessing THAT name out of millions.
I do agree that the ideomotor affect is real. But you need to understand that the entities USE the people to move the planchette or piece around. You can call it a toy but it won't change the horror stories that people have endured, and will endure in the future. Science can put names on things, and make sense out of a lot. But honestly, there's some things that just go beyond... and should be left that way...
The argument will always continue my friend. And hopefully you never experience anything unsettling. But you have to understand, for those who do, of course they're going to stand by it. Who wouldn't?

Some of those people have been scammed by their friends/acquaintances. With a little practice, you can move the planchette anywhere you wish, and scare the bejabbers out of the other player or players.
