My external hard drive won't work?

I've had my hard drive since about Christmas. I took it out of the box around February/March, but never actually tried using it until now.

I plugged it in, and it does not show up. No indication it has even been plugged in. I've checked My Computer for an icon, and even googled to make sure I did it right. Nothing.

Any ideas on how to make it work?

Update:

I did leave it plugged in over night, and it never did read it. It also has no on and off switch. I still have it plugged in, but I'm starting to feel it's the hard drive itself.

Are you sure the drive is actually switched on (does it have a switch on it?) adn powered up

    I assume its USB

Did windows get around to installing it?

As a USB device Windows must install a driver for it (you dont need any software to install it)

Sometimes Windows takes ages to recognise an external drive has been connected

When it eventually does recognise it, it will install a driver automatically (you will see a small window telling you) Did you get this?

If not then just leave the drive plugged in and switched on. Eventually Windows should get around to recognising it

(you could try switching the pc off then on with the drive connected. it may recognise it quicker)
