Ramadan: I work with a Muslim - we are good friends?
I think it's the start of that strange thing they do tomorrow when they don't eat or drink all day. Is there anything I can do or say to make things easier for him? He says he doesn't mind if I eat my lunch sandwiches at my desk but it seems a bit unkind to me. What do other muslims think?

That's very considerate of you. Thank you.
Last year, I had fasted while going to school and my friends teased me about it and held in front of me food, but honestly, I wasn't hungry. So it doesn't really matter.
He probably doesn't care about it. You should eat as you want and where you want, although I think it's very nice that you atleast questioned it. Happy Ramadan! (even though you're not muslim).
If you really think it's that bad, just quickly eat somewhere else, but it's absolutely not necessary.
Most people have the will power to get through the day. (:

I too have worked in a muslim environment. It is good manners not to eat or drink in front of one who is fasting, as you suggest. Take your lunch elsewhere if you can. Be aware that by the end of the day he will be feeling a little lightheaded and distracted and possibly grumpy so go easy on any teasing or load sharing. Fasting is good for you and takes a lot of self discipline so show respect. Try it yourself.

Peace =]
You are a very kind person. Sometimes my friends who aren't fasting eat somewhere else but honestly, I don't mind them eating infront of me :P So I guess he really doesn't mind =]
However if you feel the one who is uncomfortable or feel your are being rude then don't feel that way because you aren't (unless you're munching loudly I guess!).

How generous of him to tell you where you can eat your lunch because of his religious rituals. Personally, I wouldn't give a second thought to it. I would conduct myself the way I normally do. If that creates undue hardships on him and his rituals, then he can remove himself from the area so as to more easily stay in accordance with what he is trying to do.

it's not the start of a 'strange thing'.. it's the start of Ramadan
The reason why he said he does not mind u eating in front of him is because he knows he is fasting for Allah swt .. he has strong faith..therefore it won't bother him.. BUT.. it would be respectful of u to avoid eating in front of him :) nice thought
take care

Thank you, you are very considerate. Talk to him naturally and
if possible eat when he is not around. But after 2,3 days he will
become used to fasting and will not mind, if you eat in front of him.

'unkind' - what a wonderful word you have used.
Seriously it is great that you think of others. We don't mind that you eat because you are not fasting.
Thanks for a great post.
peace to you.
