    Yes, quite a lot of Americans are willing to waste their money on extremely BAD kids animation.

    Currently listed as "tied" for #1 with Cowboys and Aliens. Final numbers are usually released around 10 a.m. Pacific Time (Hollywood), so an exact dollar amount will be known then and the tie will be broken.

    The fact that Smurfs can even approach tops at the box office shows a complete lack of quality family movies released this summer. Parents are so desperate for anything entertaining and kid friendly they made the Smurfs a possible top BO contender.
