I have Bronchitis. How long should I wait before running again?
Well I got home Monday from a very tough Cross Country camp. I started to have trouble breathing during a run this past Wednesday. So I went to the doctor on Thursday and they told me I have Bronchitis and I ended up with an inhaler. Of course, I haven't been able to run these past couple of days and our official practices start today. When do you think I will be okay to run again without screwing my lungs up even more?

Hopefully they gave you anti-biotics. If not then you should have pushed for them. As a competative runner you need to make sure your lungs recover as fast as possible and you also want to prevent any damage as well. (long time lung conditions can cause scar tissue build up if they get bad)
Unfortunatly lung infections/conditions usually take 6 weeks to completely clear the body on their own. I know there are some steroid shots they can give you to help your lungs recoop and you should be on anti-biotics (if it's a lung infection at this point which bronchitis usually is). Go back to the doc and see if he can't put you on something for it.
It's okay to run as long as you physically feel up to it, but you will lack a lot of energy and you don't want to push your body too much. You will probably not feel like running more than 1-2 miles at a time though. I wouldn't push too much past that.

I once suffered from Chronic Bronchitis. I would suffer sometimes 3 to 4 times per year! Usually when there was a major change in the pressure outside (I live in the north, and the temperature spikes and dips do wonders to chronic sufferers of bronchitis!). Each time I would get horrible hacking coughs, hoarking up green phlegm..it was so frustrating!
The key to getting rid of your bronchitis is to find a way to completely eliminate the germs that are causing all the phlegm and irritation leading to your hoarking cough and heavy breathing. Keep reading to learn how to do kill these germs!!

Since you have a doctor I think it would be a good idea to have him answer this question for you. You just pick up that telephone thingy and call him and say, "it's me. I'm wondering when I could start running again because of this bronchitis?", and he'll tell you. I used to get bronchitis all the time in high school and had to miss the first game of basketball sectionals because of it. I ignored my doctor's advice and played the 2nd game a couple days later and wound up with pneumonia. Best to listen to your doctor!

Build it up slowly and see how you get on.
