How much should it cost to replace a residential AC compressor?

My AC crapped out and I need to fgure it out so I don't get gouged

    The compressor online will run you around 800.

    Personally if your going that route source a Dry R22 Unit. Which does not have any refrigerant in it.

    So your simply looking at a swap out, the refrigerant added by the tech.

    Typically in independent guy will charge you around 500 for a swap out.

    But you need to find out what caused the failure. If this unit is over 12 years old you might be throwing good money away into a bigger problem. If you dig around on line you should be able to source a unit for under or right at 1K.

    a compressor by itself is 300-400. a condenser & compressor is like 900, WITHOUT freon.

    compressors are coslty; better to replace the condenser/compressor as a kit.
