What do y'all think of LL Cool J?
I was listening to few of his albums, more specifically "Mama said knock you out" and "Mr. Smith", and beside the topics he raps about which at times can be boring, i do believe he was really great. Alot of energy in the rappin (ex. i shot ya), good flow, alright nothing complicated, but i prefer him to any rapper on tv right now.
I never really saw him mentioned in the section, and I do believe he had a certain influence on hip hop, overall.
Don't really think he is underrated (he's career is mostly over, imo), but maybe he should get more credit than he gets?

Well i mention him...mainly because he is one of my favorite rappers....
Mr. Smith is my favorite album from him.....Radio and Mama Said Knock You Out are classics...
I think he gets plenty of credit from Older hip hop heads and rappers....but people under the age of 21 usually don't care to bother with him....unfortunately because people also are bias thinking he is only about rapping to women....
You want Energy....two words....."ill Bomb"....

I can go for days on his music but personally i think he has done more than enough to earn at the very least Top 15 status...
LL never got slaughtered...In my opinion Canibus won but it wasn't by much at all...LL ended up dropping a super dope diss record that underground heads love to hate because....well most are bias. Regardless LL ended up winning the battle anyway after the voting took place. I disagree with the vote but lets be real...anyone that heard "The Ripper Strikes Back" and said LL got killed is on something...

LL was influential in his own right - he pretty much laid the ground for cross-over mcs and was one of the genre's earliest legitimate stars and the fact that he was equally adept at hardcore and radio-friendly material is a testament to his versatility...
He didn't exactly change the direction of hip-hop or expand the game lyrically as much as others but he was technically impressive for his time, especially in the 80s and had (and still does have) great presence on the mic and a really lean, confident flow...
The fact that he's charismatic and one of a select few, larger than-life rappers that's been able to penetrate pop culture and maintain a steady run of hit singles for over two decades also gives him an edge and status that others lack...
I actually think his discography is slightly underrated as well - albums like 14 Shots To The Dome and G.O.A.T. deserved more acclaim than they received in my opinion and were very important transitional albums in the scheme of his career...
Don't get me wrong - he's definitely released a few duds, but he still has 2 near-bonafide classics and enough top-tier material to warrant a place amongst the elite...

Whether you like it or not LL Cool J is a legend. He was actually one of the first lyrical rappers with a classic album: Radio. Mama Said Knock You Out is still amazing. It's a shame he fell off and had to pick Canibus, cause he slaughtered LL Cool J. He still is a legend.

The only 80s MCs that ever get mentioned on here are G Rap, Slick Rick, BDK, Rakim and KRS. The 80s sound is just too dated, I think. The only reason most of those guys get mentioned is for being innovative and LL Cool J wasn't all that innovative. Plus, he proclaimed himself the GOAT, which kind of makes me hate him.
