Do you have to get insurance to have a license?

When I took driver's ed, my instructor said I should get my license as soon as possible after finishing the course. I told him that I couldn't afford insurance, and he said I don't need to have insurance as long as I don't drive my parent's cars (since I would be covered under my parents' policy if I had insurance. He said I can drive a friend's car or other family members' cars, since I'd be covered under their policy). So I got my license and I haven't driven since then. I'm fine with that, I just wanted to make sure I get my license, and I'll wait until I can afford insurance when (and if) I get a better job. Two weeks later my parents' insurance company called and said I need to be insured, even though I'm not driving. Can anyone tell me the law regarding this (I'm a resident of CT), and is it possible that the insurance company (Amica) requires this even though the law doesn't? If I do have to get insurance, I'd probably have to turn in my license, since I still can't afford it. Is there any possible way I can keep my license without getting insured?

Update:

Hey, thanks everyone for all the answers! They've reassured me that I wasn't mistaken about this. Unfortunately, Amica's policy is that every driver in a household has to be insured, I can't just be listed as a non-covered driver (seems a little greedy to me). Connecticut law does not require it, but Amica does. Our only option for me to keep my license is to switch to an insurance company that doesn't require it, but my parents are happy with Amica and probably won't want to do that. Looks like I'll have to give up my license until I can afford to pay $300 a month for insurance...which probably won't be until I have a full time job after I pay my way through college :(.

I'll choose a best answer in a few days, to see if any more information comes in. Thanks again to everyone who replied.

Most insurance companies want all licensed drivers in a household to be listed on the policy. This is done to ensure they are receiving the proper premium in case one of those drivers has a loss on a covered auto. Or they ask that any other drivers in the household have their own insurance, to avoid needless claims. To answer specifically, no you do not need insurance to have a license, but you do need it to be able to own and operate a car. Borrowed cars are covered by the owners insurance company, but if you are at fault the insurance company has the right through subrogation to get their money back, but that rarely happens, usually they will just cover the loss. Most of the answers here are correct.

Your parents need to specifically exclude you from their insurance policy, so the company knows that you will not be driving the family cars. I don't know about Amica directly, but this works with other insurance companies...

Your instructor is correct that you are fine to drive cars that are not part of your household with permission from others, and you will be covered by their insurance while you drive the car.

Red is correct....My son recently got his learning permit. We used my insurance. BUT you may not be a "Covered Driver" if pulled over or have an accident once you are capable of driving alone. Many ins. policies require named drivers of males under 25 or females under 21 in order to be covered. Some policies require all drivers to be named, regardless of age, depends on the ins. co.

You parents can declare you as a non-covered driver if you are really not driving. The ins. co. can not force anyone to take insurance out on you, but the ins. co. will probably still increase the premium cost based on the potential of you driving.

You can search for the CT laws online for state specific info. Teen link included. Seek for "financial responsibility."

No, you don't need insurance to have a license. You DO need insurance to drive a car, however.
