I have no idea just what these letters are suppose to stand for. The question reads as follows, quoted from the test questionnaire that I have:
The circuit in Figure 2-2 shows the resistors r (small #2) and R (small #3) connected in parallel, but resistor R (small#1) is in series with both the battery and the parallel combination of R (small#2) and R (small#3). What is the total resistance or R (small#2) and R(small#3)?

what are you trying to solve for R? p? n?
Rp = R/n
Rnp = R
Rnp - R = 0
R(np - 1) = 0
R = 0
Rnp = R
n = R / Rp
n = 1/p
Rnp = R
p = R/Rn
p = 1/n
