Day trip into Canada?

My family is going to Mackinac Island for a vacation next week. I just figured out that the Canadian border is only an hour's drive north. We thought it would be fantastic to take our 8 yr old on an "adventure" to a foreign country.

The problem is my passport is expired, my wife's is still good and our 8 year old doesn't have one. What would we need to cross the border for a few hours and come back the same way on the same day? Do we need passports or are driver's licenses and a birth certificate enough?

You will need to get your passport renewed or apply for a passport card. To get it for next week you need to make an appointment and apply for it in person at the Regional Passport Agency in Chicago.

Your child can cross the land border until the age of 15 years using the birth certificate as proof of American citizenship.

Driver's license and a birth certificate are no longer good enough for crossing the border into Canada.

You must have a passport or an enhanced driver's license (some border states issue them).

When I was on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls last year (I do have a passport), I was riding the Maid of the Mist and ended up chatting with another woman about my age. She told me that her traveling companion wasn't with her for sightseeing that day because she'd forgotten to bring her passport, so she was "stuck" on the American side and missing out on that day's activities.

that they had in basic terms replaced the guidelines this 12 months so which you'll be careful. All shuttle between Canada and the U. S. demands a passport besides the undeniable fact that, because of the fact numerous individuals have been having issues getting their passports in time they have lifted the requirement yet in basic terms for US citizens. And Canadain citizens are being delt with on a case via case foundation. while you're crossing the boarding at Coutts/Sweetgrass boarder crossing you may pass to Lethbridge that's quite close or take the 4 hourpersistent as much as Calgary. Lethbridge is a sprint on the small length yet Calgary has some million people there. i've got finished the go over in a condo vehicle many cases and had no issues.

Your wife is fine to cross the border

You need to get your passport in order, or use an enhanced driver's license to cross the border.

Since your child is under the age of 16, all he would need is his birth certificate.

If you can't get your proper id to cross the border, they wont let you go. If your wife and child still wanted to go, they would need a letter of authorization from you allowing her to take your child to Canada.

Technically, to get into Canada, you need only basic ID like a driver's license. A birth certificate is fine for your son.

The problem is, US law requires passports for everyone 16 or old when entering the USA. This includes returning Americans. This is US law, and nothing to do with Canada. So, we would welcome you, but, your own country won't take you back!
