Can a manual shift car be driven without operating the clutch?

If the clutch is working, but the driver doesn't know to use it, can the first gear or two be forced? Is this what is meant by "grinding gears"? If so, how fast can you go without using the clutch? Can you get all the way up to 5th gear/60 mph?

I know you can do it in a semi truck. As you gradually accelerate you gently nudge the shift stick into the next gear.

Getting into first gear is almost impossible unless you start the engine when it's already in gear. Today's cars have an interlock so the starter won't work unless the clutch is pressed. Other than first or reverse, it's possible to shift gears without using the clutch, but it puts a lot of wear on the transmission.

    Hi

Transport drivers have 13 speeds and the don`t use the clutch that much. But your friend needs to learn first with using the clutch. Grinding gears is when someone puts it in a gear and the rpm`s are off for that gear and you will feel it and hear it.

It can but you would have to start it in gear to get moving and the lockouts prevent that, i drive a stick and shift gears without the clutch often, you just have to match rpm`s with the gears and the speed. It`s not recommended but if you are good at it it really won`t hurt anything. I`ve driven big rigs and shifted without the clutch but the trucks had a main box and a "browny" and once you`re moving it`s no problem if you match rpm`s to the speed ,if you do it wrong though you can have a problem, lol.

Jessica, Yes you can drive a car with out using the clutch as long as your already running driving along the road, you use throttle control to change gears, if you going up or down gears it is the same. put your hand on gear stick control throttle so as your not increasing speed or decreasing speed and put a little pressure on stick and it will slip either up or down which ever your after [ up or down gear ] i have been driving using this method for ever. and no it will not damage your engine or gear box. N.B.you must use the clutch to get the car moving in gear first OK.

You can if one know what they are doing, but it's still not recommended. There is a chance one would snap parts of the syncro rings(grinding gears). Sending the broken parts into the gears. Either way a new transmission will be needed.

If you want to destroy your transmission, go right ahead. But most cars now will prevent the gearshift from moving without depressing the clutch first, unless you force it to almost the breaking point. Old VW beetles were able to shift in this manner, just be letting off the gas pedal. That is the only manual car I have ever driven that was capable of that.

If you start out in 1st gear, you might be able to get up to about 40MPH, but at that point you risk over-revving the motor (turning too fast- too many RPMs)
