Can you take a rental car on a ferry from the US to Canada and back?

Most rental agencies in states bordering Canada will let you take a car into Canada so long as you tell them ahead of time so they can give you the yellow insurance card. A few have odd rules, e.g., one told me they don't let people drive their SUVs into Montreal although regular cars are OK. At the border, the Canadians will give you a hard time if you are a Canadian driving a US rental, since they'll assume you're trying to avoid taxes. An American driving a US rental is fine, so long as you have the usual paperwork.

Some rental companies do allow this but you must get their agreement in advance otherwise your insurance is void. Also you must carry the rental agreement. You might be asked for it at the border. Obviously you need to carry your driving licence and passport as well.

Pretty standard for tourists to drive/ferry back and forth, up to the rental company of course to allow that. We did, had no problems at all.
