Last car I bought was used. They wanted $14,500 for it. It probably occurred to them that they weren't going to get that much when we went out for the test drive and it wouldn't start and they had to jump it.

I made an offer of $12,000 even. Storm clouds began to form on the upper slopes of the salesperson, but he did carry that offer to the Great and Powerful Wizards. He came back with an obviously carefully-calculated $12,398.

"Put a new battery in it," I said, "and it's a deal."

    They did, and it was.

That's not possible and it also depends on the dealership. They've already set the minimum amount they would let a car go for before you even walk in the door. Even though it might seem like they're dropping the price down for your sake it wont really matter because no matter what you're still going to over pay for the car. The idea is to make you think you're getting what you want. I'm not telling you to not buy from a dealership. I wouldn't generalize salesmen since they don't necessarily make income the same way as each other so their tactics for selling a car will be different from each other.

Remember everyone needs to make money, the dealership deserves a profit on their investment in the car & the dealership ect... Yes you can haggle, just check out KBB price and maybe go a thousand under that...thats Fair for both parties!

Car dealerships have a set minimum price they are willing to let the car go. The sticker price is always higher than that. They rarely, if ever, let the price get to the minimum when haggling. However, if you offer cash upfront, they are more likely to let the car go cheaper just because it makes their job easier when they don't have to work with loans.

Of course you can, but they don't want you to. When I bought my first new car, I got maybe $3000 off sticker price next to the other discounts. Never fall for a dealer's "lowest price" because even if you bargain, they will still make money with your business. You should set a lowest and highest price you will pay, and even if they do not accept your first offer, you still will get the car for a cheaper price.

Yes. The car I wanted to buy was 8,500 hundred dollars and I told them I would give them 7,800 Cash right then and their. I was signing the paperwork and driving off the lot with the Car about 25 mins later. If you offer Cash up front and dont need a loan, it is one of the easiest ways to get the price you want.

Cash makes them lose money. And they get cash from you or the finance company
