Where can I set my GOLDFISH free?

So my friend bought me a goldfish as a surprise gift. I was so excited but my mom was not. She brought it in a tiny fish bowl which i didn't like- I put it in a larger bowl while i didn't buy the tank yet. My mom is against fish being "imprisoned" in a tank. So as soon as I got the goldfish she told me to set it free. So my question is where is a good place to set a goldfish free?

Its only one goldfish so I don't think it will overpopulate.

My mom says it will live a happier life in a river, is this true?

Please don't put the goldfish in a natural water system. I doubt the fish will be "happier" in a river. Goldfish are domesticated and don't know how to survive without human help. He's not adapted to live in fast-moving water bodies and will likely be some other fish's dinner very, very quickly. He's also likely been reared on pelleted food - something that you just don't find in the wild. If he manages to avoid being eaten, he'll inevitably starve.

If you simply must release it, find someone with a backyard koi/goldfish pond or something.

It's illegal to set domesticated pets free. That's also introducing a non native species into an environment, which, if you look at the Great Lakes or anywhere really is a big no no. Tell your mom the only choices she has are keeping the fish or killing the fish. Actually the animal shelter might take fish in, I'm not too sure. If your mom wants to give the goldfish more freedom she can build a pond for it and keep it there.

I don't see why she would consider a bowl less free than a tank... Do some research on goldfish care and then try to convince your mom.

    Good luck

It is illegal to let captive animals loose in the wild. There are a number of reasons for this.

    1. Your fish could be carrying a disease. Even if your fish does not look sick, it could be harboring bacteria that it is immune to or is not affected by yet. When released into a wild population, all of the other fish it comes in contact with would be infected, as they are not immune. They would likely die, completely destroying the ecological balance of the region.

    2. YOU might be only releasing one goldfish, but what if someone else did the same thing? There could already be another goldfish in the area that you are releasing yours. In this case, they could breed, and this would add another animal into the area's food chain. The goldfish would likely eat enough that there wouldn't be enough food for other animals. There would be a drop in these animals' population, and they could even cease living in the area, further destroying the area's ecological balance.

If you can't keep the fish, find someone near you with a pond in their yard. Make sure the pond is not connected to any larger bodies of water. If it is alright with them, then you can let the goldfish live in their pond.

If you "set it free" you'll likely be breaking the law. Unless you live in China, it's not a native species and introducing non-native species to local wild waterways is illegal. And yes, there is an issue with over population IF it survives it can breed with other closely related Carp species or other illegally released Goldfish. Illegally released Goldfish is a massive problem in many places, to the point they are culled, so no it won't live a happy life, there's a high chance if the local wild life didn't fish it out and eat it, a local waterway maintenance company will, and they will then break its spine and kill it.

No you can't set it free.

Find a relative with a Goldfish pond and ASK them if they would like it.

Yep you're slaughtering them. If the raw sewage they have to travel in doesn't kill them, the waste water processing plant surely does. Solid waste (or any other solid object) are filtered and skimmed off the raw sewage and ground up to a uniform consistency for further processing. Oh, and that idea you have of dumping them directly into a lake or river... Don't do that either. Goldfish are an alien species in the wild. They don't belong there. In a lot of states it's illegal to use goldfish as live bait for this reason.

Well, most environmental activists don't want to kill their fish. Every fish you flush down that toilet dies. The water doesn't go directly to a lake or ocean, it goes to a dirty sewer and/or a water treatment plant. After that the water goes into a river or ocean. Goldfish thrive in fresh water and will die in salt water (the ocean is salt water.) You're better off saving your money by leaving the fish in the store where they keep their water clean. The fish aren't smart enough to realize that they're in a tank, anyway.

Tell your mom setting it free will make it suffer and die, or get eaten alive. It doesn't feel imprisoned in a tank. Plus, you might hurt your friends feelings if you let it go.
