Do i need a selective service number to become a cop?

I took an exam to become a police officer and did well. I was given an application and then decided to stop the process because I saw on the application a place for a selective service number. These days its automatic when u get a license. But when i hit that age, i believe they mailed an application which i ignored. Then i read you could be fined and/or imprisoned for not applying for one. Its now too late for me to get one. But is it a necessity to have to become an officer?

You don't mention the jurisdiction you're applying for. Certain states will deny a drivers license and/or state employment to males who don't register...and that would make it tough to be a police officer. I don't think the Federal Government (Selective Service System) would reach out and interfere with employment at the state or local level. Then again, if the jurisdiction asks for it on the application they probably think it's important. If you feel you have a valid explanation for not registering you could apply and see what happens.

Yes, it is necessary to have a selective service number (if you are a male citizen between 18-26). failure to obtain the number will bar you from many benefits (student loans, civil service employment, etc). If you have not yet applied, do so as soon as possible.
