Are you talking about this commercial?

and...I'm assuming you live in the United States.

Firstly, falcons are not "pets." They are wild animals and as such, should be treated with respect. It takes years and years of training, experience, and practice to have your own falcon, and even then--technically, the bird belongs to the Government as part of the Department of Fish and Wildlife. They would have the right to take your bird away from you.

But if you look into it and find that you are serious, you can become a falconer--a person that hunts with the birds. It's an intense and rigorous lifestyle, but it is well worth it.

There are 3 stages of a falconer:

Apprentice: at least 2 years training under a General or a Master Falconer, must get inspected periodically by the Fish and Wildlife Department, can only possess one bird of prey at any one time: either an American Kestrel or a red-tailed hawk. If you live in Florida, Red-shouldered hawks are included in this category. If you live in Alaska, Northern Goshawks are also permitted as an Apprentice Falconer

General: After at least 2 years of training, or when your master thinks it appropriate, you can advance to the level of general falconer. you can possess two birds at any one time-- not limited to any one kind, although golden eagles are forbidden.

Master: A further X amount of years as a general and more experience; you can become a master falconer, and have 3 birds at any one time, now including Great-Horned Owls. golden eagles are still forbidden.

You can have a golden eagle w/ a special permit (the name is slipping my mind right now), although it is extremely difficult to gain permission for a golden eagle.

As for "really wanting to get a pet falcon", it's intense to just "get a pet falcon". It can cost upwards of $5000-10,000 to "try out" if you're serious. You need to build an appropriate mews (or, a hawk house) to house your hawk or falcon. These facilities will be inspected by the fish and wildlife department. You will also need to purchase all equipment, books needed on falconry, medications, and take the state/federal falconry exam and pass w/ a minimum of 80% to become a licensed Apprentice falconer. It takes quite a lot to "try out" falconry--after all, those who practice falconry view it as a lifestyle, not a hobby. It's a full-time job that doesn't pay off very well.

However, if you are serious about working with these noble masters of the sky, you can contact your state falconry club and inquire about the next meet. Falconers will assemble to compete their birds against each other. Try to attend the meet. Get to know falconers--but don't be too pushy. Ask if you can go out on a hunt with them when hunting season begins. Most falconers are eager to spread awareness and show off their birds.

Why not see if there is a Falcon Sanctuary near you? They take a great deal of looking after. I did an experience day at a bird place and each bird is weighed every day and fed according to its weight to make sure it doesn't gain or lose any more than an ounce or something insane like that!

Yeah, I was wondering when that stupid commercial would have this effect. Contact your state's DNR office (Department of Natural Resources). The info is usually accessible on line. In the USA you must become a licensed falconer to hold these birds. This requires you to apprentice under a falconer in good standing in your state. After successfully completing apprenticeship (may take several years) you must pass certain tests showing your knowledge of birds of prey. Beginner falconers are allowed to keep only certain birds & as you gain experience you can apply for permits to hold larger, more demanding species. You will need to get federal permits from the US Fish & Wildlife Service as well. Of course you'll learn all this during your apprentice period. Before you are allowed to obtain a bird of prey federal & state guys will come to inspect your mews (housing for birds of prey). They can stop by any time to check on your operation. Keeping these birds takes extreme dedication---it's prob not as you imagine it if you're going by that ridiculous commercial. You do realize that because of their diet you will be cleaning up piles of maggots on a daily basis, esp in the summer heat. right? These birds are kept for hunting, not as hobby pets.
