Can I wash toddler toys like legos and duplos in the washer with bleach?

I was given toys for my soon to be born son, and was bleaching everything in the sink thinking: "How can this be easier than doing this by hand?"

I was wondering if it's ok to throw the toys (like duplos & large legos etc.) in the clothes washer and run it like normal with a little bleach. (I also feel like that would be more effective than the dishwasher.)

What do you think?

Update:

To crazydahlialady: As I stated, I was looking for a quick way to wash them with bleach without having to do it by hand. I don't always have that much time to do this.

Thanks.

Maybe put them in a pillow case, tie tightly closed and run on delicate cycle. I would also set washer on a larger load setting than necessary to allow for it to move around well.

Do NOT put them in your washer or you will end up seriously damaging your machine!

I would put the toys in a large tub or sink and soak with 1 cup bleach and fill tub/sink with hot water. Then let sit for a few minutes go back and drain the sink/tub and rinse off each toy. You need to do this by hand or else you will end up destroying a machine and having to spend 400+ to buy a new machine!

the dishwasher works better for a couple reasons.. most dishwasher soap has chlorine bleach in it and they heat the water.. put the small stuff in a lingerie bag and run through dishwasher...if the plastic food containers can handle the heat so can the toys..

Source(s): it always worked well for me when my son was little

I like the pillow case idea. You can also use a net bag or several even and then wash with the normal bleach load. I wash plastic lunch baggies this way and it works great!

I would fill a sink, or tub full of hot water and a couple tablespoons maybe up to 1/4 cup. let them sit for a while, wipe down the obvious stuff then rinse and then let dry.
