Why is god referred to as a person?
Everytime i hear an argument for or against god, people always refer to god as a person, as if he is a physical being. Can anyone explain why people do this? Scripture(from any faith) or historic figures would be great.
On a personal note, i believe in an omnipresent god, so god is the universe and every atom in it. If God is the universe and the creator of it, then I believe the study of god is science. I believe in scripture and believe that they are filled with history and values.
I have nothing against any religion, its just that i have always thought it was odd that the monotheist religions believed in a omnipresent god that is not a physical being, but they refer to God as a person.
Im not talking about the pronouns used when referring to god, I am referring to when people refer to him as a physical being. To the person who responded with Anthropomorphism, which explains it well enough, I am looking for more religious, rather than psychological, reasons.

It makes sense that a magical imaginary friend would be anthropomorphized. It is the rare theist who doesn't do so to some extent.

Just because you believe in sometning Foolish and Superstitious doesn't make it become Reasonable and True......it remains Foolish and Superstitious! Religion iis not a Science...and to say it is only displays Ignorance and questions your Intelligence and ability to use Truth and Reason. Imaginary gods, godesses, and saviors, and there are numerous, are always thought of as being in the Human form (Men or Women) because Humans can conceive no higher form than their own. No god created Man in His image......but Man did create god in His image! Wake up! Free your Mind! Stop being a puppet ......... who wants to be someones sheep.....especially when the herder is leading you to Darkness and Ignorance! Brainwashing and Indoctrination from birth is the cause of your Mental Slavery.......Truth and Reason is the way to Free and Save your mind. Good Luck!

People have humanized God. Jesus Himself did it by calling God Father. But God is a spirit and not a human being.

The LDS religion believes that God is a physical being. He can not be everywhere at once, but his influence can be felt everywhere.

Since God obviously has a personality, that indicates that he is a person.
Being a person doesn't preclude him from also being the Creator, Jehovah God.
