Where to stay in Rome for 5 nights in mid-September?
My fiance and I are headed to Rome via overnight train from Paris and we would like a hotel in a decent area.
We intend on walking as our primary mode of transport (transit from the station may be a requirement!).
We would like something near cafe's and as a bonus some shops.
We are willing to spend between 100-150 Euro a night ($100-$200 Canadian).
We are able to go up another 50 Euros a night if need be to get a good area.
As well I should have specified which area of Rome we should stay in, as opposed to a specific hotel (though a hotel recommendation is a real bonus and appreciated).

Hi!
First of all, if you want to visit Rome on foot you should stay in a central zone. The best one is the zone near to piazza repubblica or piazza venezia or piazza di spagna or piazza del popolo.
The vatican is a beautiful zone, but it is not central.
Be careful not to stay at piazza vittorio emanuele, behind the central station, because by night it is not a safe place to go.
I suggest the Starhotel Metropole: it is near to piazza repubblica, not far from the central station and the underground. My parents have stayed there many times and the hotel is a real international hotel, clean and elegant.
Its location is full of restaurants and shops. If you take bus number 64 you get to the vatican (be careful because it is the bus of pickpokets).
If you need other informations please ask, I live in Rome!

Gosh theres about 1,963 hotels in rome and theres lots to see. I guess the best way is go to www.priceonhotel.com use the search box for your stay. You will go to a page with all the hotels, pictures, reviews and amenities. There a map to see where the hotel is located. The site will compare all hotels available and give you the best price available on the internet. You will be spoilt for choice really. Some hotels i found near the city centre. There is just too many :)
1.When In Rome Accommodation 3star 2km to city center - $65 good reviews
2.A Home For Holiday Bed & Breakfast Roma 3star - $73
3. Mondial Hotel Rome 4star - $137
4.Villa San Lorenzo Maria Hotel Rome 3star $85
My recommendation is
Marcella Royal Hotel Rome -4star - $170
Quirinale Hotel Rome -4star - $172
Bettoja Hotel Mediterraneo Rome - $180
I think its best you just go through and see what is best to your liking
hope this helps

Here is a link with some hotels. Termini area is great for public transit but not so good for nightlife and night time in general. Make sure to check out the area around the centre sites like Campo dei Fiori, Piazza Venezia.

I use this site for hotels here in Italy when I'm out exploring. http://www.venere.com/italy/rome/
The Pantheon, Navona, Trevi Fountain, Trastevere or Colosseo areas are all good for walking to the attractions. One place I particularly like is the Cesà ri Hotel which is near the Pantheon along the way to Trevi Fountain. .
The Venere site has many other options; you can sort by area of the city and price to find something available that suits your budget.
