Vegans: do you feel there is enough choice of vegan friendly food to buy in supermarkets?

Just out of interest. Is there anything that you might like? Anything perhaps to take to work with you, such as vegan butter in small pots?

I try and avoid giving money to supermarkets, the only thing they sell I can't get elsewhere is cat litter. It is better to support small grocers if you can. I'm lucky enough to live in the vegan capital of australia, where we can get pastries, cakes, pizza, chocolate, ice cream and loads of other stuff all made locally. There are vegan ice cream and chocolate brands you can get at the supermarkets, I just prefer not to.

I don't eat vegan butter, it (usually) has trans fats. I do get tempted by processed foods once in a while, but I try and avoid them... they either have too much fat, salt or sugar... sometimes all of the above. So there isn't anything I would like to see at the supermarket because it will be unhealthy and expensive. I'm happier getting fresh vegies out of the dumpster behind the damn supermarket and cooking what I find. I just made cauliflower and leek soup for dinner, it was delicious and the only thing I had to buy was a can of coconut milk. There is enough left over for another two or three meals.

It really depends on the supermarket, as some have far better choices than others. Around here, Sunflower Market and Whole Foods are amazing. However, all could do better. I have no idea what more I could need, as there is now amazing vegan cheese (Daiya, Teese), dozens of brands of vegan lunch meats and quick protein (Field Roast, Tofurky, Boca, etc), and plenty of choices.

Hm... I guess more vegan pre-made sauces and salad dressings would be nice, and more vegan items in the deli would be great.

By the way, Earth Balance is a vegan "butter" (margarine) that is healthy and sold in almost all grocery stores.

It's hard to find foods without any sort of animal by-products. Maybe grass. A lot of health nuts like tofu, soy milk, wheat grass, garden burgers and so on. If you're %100 vegan than you need to go to a specialty store that caters to the vegan way of life.

I don't live in the US (I'm assuming you and most other people posting here do), but I think the same "vegan friendly" foods can be found anywhere; fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, nuts & seeds. As for the more processed foods like margarine, it's just about reading the labels. There are a lot of soy-based margarines that don't contain any animal based ingredients even though they don't advertise themselves as vegan. Ironically where you have to be careful is with a the meat substitutes because a lot of them, like "Quorn", contain eggs and/or milk.

In general, no. It gets easier after a while and after you find what works for you. Whole Foods is awesome for vegan friendly products.

Yes and no. No because I would love to see Vegenaise being sold at a store that isn't WF. Yes because less "specialty" items means less overprocessed products to buy.

The entire produce section is vegan, as are numerous other products, like rice, pasta, tortillas, etc.

    Suffice it to say- yeah.
