I don't know about Chandler Bing, but one of the running jokes from How I Met Your Mother is that we never find out what Barney actually does for a living.
We know he works for a company described as 'the most evil corporation on the planet (but they prefer to be thought of as the people who put the fuzz on tennis balls)' - I can't remember the name - and when they bought Goliath National Bank they transferred him, but whenever anyone asks him what he does, he just laughs and says 'Please.'
