Flying bug that digs tunnels?

So I was outside a little while ago and saw a medium sized flying bug that dug a hole about the size of his body and dragged a dead caterpillar into the hole. What kind of bug is this?

    I agree with the digger wasp identification, but the orange on the abdomen indicates that it is not Sphex pensylvanicus.

    I did too this week , its a hornet !! they are extensive i just about peed my pants as im terrifed of regular wasps. on the recent s it hasmentioned an wasp invasion interior the united kingdom !! so i think of i might desire to might desire to leave lol

    That there is a type of "Digger Wasp" or "Great Black Wasp" Sphex pensylvanicus
