The Lonely Soul of Yahoo Answers?
I'm quite bored and lonely here all alone except for my dog, two cats, hedgehog, bunny, and dove. I know that quite a few creatures but I've been without human contact for the entire day I can't bring the dove in cause the cats will eat her, plus she's really sweet, but she thinks of the house as her personal toilet and I really don't feel like cleaning up after her. The bunny feels the same way plus she really doesn't want to play with me she just wants to run around. The hedgehog is antisocial and the cats are asleep, which leaves me with the dog who is also asleep but would be happy to do something if I woke her up. I've watched TV and been on the computer most of the day and TV is incredibly boring since we don't have cable anymore. I played a few video games but got bored. I played with the dog and gave her a bath at around 4:30, other than that my day has been uneventful. I guess I'm lucky that there's no junk food in the house because if there was I would have devoured it all by now. So here I am, The Lonely Soul of Yahoo Answers waiting for any tips on ways to entertain myself, and playing in traffic isn't even an option because there is no traffic. So please, help the lonely soul. =(

I know exactly how you feel. I had to house-sit for a friend of mine for a whole week and take care of her 6 pets (3 dogs, 3 cats) while she was away. To keep myself entertained, I spoke with friends on Skype (I was out of my hometown, too so I didn't have friends nearby to hangout with), went for walks outside, and baked/cooked to help pass the time. I also did chores to keep the house tidy (it sounds un-fun, but it really does make the day go by faster and you usually think up something to do while working). I took a couple naps, did some reading, listened to music, worked out, took the dogs out for a walk, and had some fun messing with my appearance (I gave myself a haircut which actually turned out well). Maybe you could have some fun applying makeup or trying on outfits or do art projects. You don't have to be good at art to have fun with it :)

Ahh, Justine, so tragic. You are bored. So I will try to help “the lonely soul.” I am not sure how old you are, so I am going to assume that you are a teenager. By contrast, I am a disabled Vietnam combat veteran in his 70s. It’s hard for me to get around very well now due to old combat injuries, but I am grateful that I was blessed with an active life as long as I was. I joined the Army right out of high school at age 17 and wound up on the border with North Korea before I was 18. A buddy of mine who was a hot rod mechanic supercharged our recon tank and we got that rascal up to 65 miles per hour. We were convinced we could out-dodge those North Korean tankers in those slow Russian tanks. I stayed in the Army and later became an officer, serving a full career. After the Army I taught as a university professor for over 20 years.
In my retirement, my hobby began as a wolf rescuer but then my wife came home with a pet hedgehog one day. I read up on them and was appalled by the bad literature – and then one of my students was going into the Peace Corps and could not take her hedgehog with her. So, we wound up with two hedgehogs. Then, a pet store was going to euthanize (kill) a hedgehog because she was “too wild,” and people kept bringing her back and demanding refunds. Do you see where this is going? Now, 15 years later, I have cared long term for over 300 hedgehogs, and what a rich experience that has been. That’s how your question came up – hedgehog.
Justine, I have thousands of suggestions for you, but you may find all of those “boring.” Too bad. Because soon you will go out into the world and will have to choose some sort of direction. Now is the time to search that out. In the meantime, send the hedgehog to us! We will pay the airfare. A new challenge. We have 45 hedgehogs in residence at our rescue and just last week one of our grumpiest hedgehogs, Swartzie, Jr., apparently decided he wanted to go on one of our educational road trips. When I changed out his condo, he did an unusual thing (unusual for him, anyway). He unrolled just enough for me to rub his tummy. His transformation was amazing and he was a big hit at the Critterfest at our local Dinosaur Center last Sunday.
I look back on a long life of excitement, joy, pain, and thousands of fantastic experiences! And, I will tell you, I have never had cable television – because I have never watched television (unless staying in a hotel). I don’t eat junk food or fast food. Why do that when there is so much wonderful food out there, and wonderful recipes. Make it yourself! Get a good Italian cook book and make it yourself (heaven on earth!). Sit down and plot where you want to go and see what kind of education you need to get there.
I would like to suggest that the “entertainment” that comes to you is hollow and fleeting, and ultimately worthless. Perhaps you can start by finding a place to volunteer in your community, maybe a homeless shelter or a soup kitchen (where you can practice Italian cooking!!). I think you will be surprised when you are helping others how rewarding (and non-boring) it will be.
