What would happen if the earth came to a halt?
Let's say the earth just stopped moving for whatever logical reason the earth might stop moving, what would happen and why?
I'm wondering not because I think the earth will fall out of the sky, but rather because I'm curious to see what might come about as a result of this imaginary event.
I mean what would happen geologically, like to the oceans and stuff. I imagine there would be a lot of storms and tsunamis and tornadoes and earthquakes etc, from the earth falling to produce and rotation.
Does anyone agree, and if so why, or why not
@ Gab_Nav The reason I want to know, is that I'm fairly interested in how the weather works, and I'd love to know how one of the biggest catastrophes possible (the earth stopping completely) would effect the weather and why.
I just want to clarify that by "stop" I mean absolutely no motion whatsoever. I understand that our earth moves relative to the sun and center of the galaxy as well, besides the motion of rotating. So by "stop" I not only mean no rotation, but none of these other motions as well.
@ Tejaa j, no offense but... we're you... high when you happened to write that?
Whether or not you were, I found your answer to be very entertaining... although I couldn't really understand about half of it.

Ready to down-vote? Okay first read.. then act. Aliens would board on the earth...and we could get down/off.. alight... in space.. go spacewalking. Or they - the aliens- would throw us down and out... send us on the moon..(our graveyard).
If earth stops rotating/revolving, we would have sun on one side always. We will haveto live on the other side.. dark side. We can use the front as field for laying all the solar panels for electricty.. to be used on the dark side, by us. All boiling water on front side can be circulated to the back-dark side tokeep us warm.(of course, before halting we will have all of it in pipes). We will have malls and theatres in space, where we will shop etc. We will have space excursions, floating games, float-kissing-and more, in space, chasing floating icecream in space... lots of fun. Seen the film "Wall-E"? We with gas cannisters - aerosols - we could have a ball-dance in zero gravity on earth -without learning any steps! People emptied their pockets and brains seeing Wall-E. But they are going to down-vote me here. Buggers. Hheheh. We would have no gravity and so any one could jet at the moon at rocket speed. At the slightest excretion, we could race off to anywhere in space- or have a dance, as i said. Wall-E could not excrete. We can. Eh? no need of peroleum and other propellants. Mere farting would send us zoooooming! :-))))). No need to waste precious public money on space shuttles and the so-called scientists along with their mumbo-jumbo-dumbo projects. We could simply build a ladder to the moon. A railway. Maybe/Of course, the moon will go around us. That is the moon's wish. Once in a while, it will stop to take rest and to say hello to us.
Yes, and the sun would look white, which it really is. We see it yellow because one color -blue - is absorbed by the atmosphere. Two colors: green and red reach us, creating the illusion of the sun being yellow. If all three join - red green and blue, the result is white. Sun IS white. If earth stops, we would have no atmosphere and hence no filtering of the blue color. And so, the sun would appear white. The stars would not twinkle, and all poetries of sun-moon-stars would be trash. We will have to create new stories.. HEheh;-)). We can have stables on moon. Already someone is selling land-plots on moon. Lunarcity.com. Dream of a honey'moon'!. On earth, marriage and sex in zero-gravity -- in slow motion!.. ;-)). Wwooooowwww... Think of Grand-Prix F1 car races on the moon/earth - competitors being martian human settlers, moonians, earthians, titanic settlers and the tramps in between. President of the moon would be a lunatic. And the president of US would be more than happy and eager to be freinds with him. This because moon holds so much ores and minerals. US would do dirty politics to loot that treasure. Wars in the name of liberty, fraternity and equality. The moon president - like saddam - would be hanged. Olympics on earth and moon. All records will be broken due to no gravity. Local city authorities would have it easy to pump water in no-gravity. And skyscrapers of five miles would be a common sight on earth, due to no gravity. And more.. drug running.. etc. Of course, we would have technology to stay and live on a still rock. That is Arthur clarke's and Star Wars etc. fiction. Everybody hails it. People queue at he box-office and praise the mumbo-jumbo-bullshit fiction. So, they got to vote my answer best. Eh..Hypocrites, where art thee?
Eh.. Arthur Clarke wrote fiction. And that is what is important, - not today's data-maniacs/slaves/blinds. I am writing a story. I am creating a world. I am not a moron to fall to the temptation of data-blurting on any slightest chance. Eh.. those data-blurting people are like the one in the saying: "all dressed up and ready, but nowhere to go.. just waiting for an invitation".. Dead are those who live, eat and excrete data. I create worlds. Let us see who is so wise to vote me down?

If you stop the earth from rotating on its axis, then there is a good example that you can look that is very close to the earth. And that object is the Moon. The moon has stopped rotating and that is the reason why we will only see one side of it all the time. Without rotation, the general circulation will be much more simple.Heated air will rise where the sun would be shining. Then this air will move toward the dark and cold side of the planet and where it will sink. That air will then move toward the warm side of the planet. There will be no rotating motion of any kind like tornadoes, hurricanes, high and low pressure systems, etc.
However, if you mean stopping it orbit around the sun too (a complete dead stop in space), then the earth will be quickly be pulled by the gravitational pull of the sun. The planet will likely make impact with the sun and become part of the sun. So it would be the end of the world as we know it.

The moon does rotate, it just rotates on its axis so slow and revolves around us at the same time that we cannot see it rotate but it is.
Anyway, one side of the Earth facing the sun will be bombarded by heat and radiation and the other will be a frozen wasteland. Also since the atmosphere is moving the same time as us the atmosphere will keep moving regardless resulting in VERY high winds.
BTW you have 2 questions exactly the same.I have answered the other one in the same words just FYI.

The earth's rotation about its axis is for stability and its revolution around the sun is to stay in its track in relation to the other heavenly bodies. Now you can very well imagine what would happen. In short the earth will not be there(as it will be sucked by the sun) to experience any storm or tsunami.

All life would end because the earth would no longer produce a magnetic field around it to protect it from the harmful radiation from the sun. Anything else that you surmise would be meaningless because there would not be anything living to care.

you would slam into the wall or if you were outside you would get pushed at ? miles an hour... probably terrible sunamis and stuff like that. why? idk my geography teacher said so...
