Why aren't my computer speakers working?

There is no sound coming from my computer speakers, and when I go to Volume Control it says, "There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printers and Hardware then click Add Hardware." I have no idea what its talking about, im currently running Windows XP... if someone could please help, it would be greatly appreciated...

I havent used xp for a very long time, but from memory you go to control panel then go to a icon that looks like a speaker, from there you should be able to find how to setup your speakers if you look through the options.

This means that your Operating System can't recognize your soundcard. To fix this open up My Computer and right-click on the whitespace behind the icons and select Properties.

Go to the tab that says Hardware and open up the Device Manager. You are going to look for your sound card in there. If you see any yellow triangles with a "!" inside them, right click them and select properties and try to update the driver using Windows Update. If it can't find the driver, then you may have to go to your computer manufacture's website and see if you can find the driver under the support section and install it, then reboot the system.

If it still doesn't work, then your sound card may be fried. Just buy a new one and install it.
