Why will we not have 1,000 comments about this?

If an umpire is percieved to have missed a call, there will be all kinds of questiuons and comments on here about it. The situation with Zambrano throwing at Chipper Jones was handled beautifully by Home Plate Umpire Tim Timmons (not only with the immediate ejection of Zambrano, but heading off the Braves who were about to storm the field). Hats off to Mr. Timmons for a job beautifully done! Unless you have umpired, you have no idea what a pressure cooker that situation can be. Why are people so quick to criticize things they know very little about?

Update:

Edit: So, Brad, if a player makes a good play, why do we praise him? He's just doing what he's paid to do, right? That's the direction of your argument. Sorry, it just doesn't fly!

Update 2:

@No Special Agenda - Please don't presume that you have the right to tell me what I should or should not post. I am in no way trying to put anyone down, just presenting another view. You, on the other hand, are influenced by past disagreement and just taking a shot. I will not enter into lengthy discussion back and forth as before, just suffice to say we disagree. Brad, no harm was intended, simply presenting another way of looking at it. It wasn't meant to do anything except show the fallicy of the "no praise for doing what they're supposed to do" argument for umpires.

Update 3:

I apologize to everyone else for thinking that an inelligent argument could take place with no special agenda. I should have known better. He and I disagreed on something before and since I disagreed with his all-knowing opinion, he decided that I am arrogant and my opinions are worthless (because they're not what he thinks). I will not answer this ignorance and I apologize. It's not fair to others to have to read his personal attacks.

I think it's contradictory that if an umpire misses a call a player will get in his face and start yelling but if a player misses a ball the umpire can't get in their face. That would make the game more interesting if the umpires started doing that.

Umpiring is a thankless job. Doug Harvey once said "[umpiring] is the only

job where you are expected to be perfect on the first play and THEN get better".

Fans should be required to umpire one game (at any level) before they can complain about a call. I used to schedule kid umpires for Little League games and you wouldn't believe how cruel some of the parents are to 10 to 12 year old kids.

Maybe your comment to Brad should have stayed off this site. A lot of us feel when we do our job the praise never comes from any body else in the work world. So its only when we hear we screwed up the comments will be forth coming. That's the world in the yesteryear and more today. We are no different from the sports world to expect a good effort in the umpire's careful view and handling of such a situation like mentioned above. We do have the right to make comments about what we know or don't know about. This is a free country. Your expertise of umpiring hinders your smug attitude about everybody else here. Maybe you should stay off the umpire comments and let people learn on their own. The situation with Molina recently was handled well too. He stood his ground and five days by the league was light compared to the personal assault, the spit bombardment and multiple chest bumping he had to endure. I am seen this to this extreme as of late, but the umpire bowed none to a player with anger issues like a spoiled child not getting his way........( I see things differently and don't like players who thing they own the sport and can do what everything they feel they can muster in their opinions)@ jackie O

Your opinions aren't worth a crap and people should ignore you and your arrogance won't set you free.....

Of course today the umpires didn't shine in this missed tag calls, and one no call on an out. Their ball and strike calls made both teams, the Pirates and the Brewers steaming. After various looks at the plays and strike zone its no wonder people have issues with the MLB umpires sometimes. The review story looks better and better and maybe a couple of per team for the skipper to ask for a video relook to diminish some of their stupid mistakes. No praise today on their calls. I think their roles will diminish in the future if they keep getting it wrong......

First umpiring is very difficult and people should try it before they knock it. Second, umpires make a lot of mistakes during the game - players just have to deal with it. If they would admit their mistakes or if some umpires would get fired then people would go easier. there is very little accountability for umpires. I am watching a game now and the home plate umpire does not call strikes above the waist - he is missing all of those calls. The phantom double play, the ball arrives first but late tag, etc.

Finally, kill the ump is an old favorite cheer.

They do Brad...great point btw Jackie.

Timmons did handle it magnificently because he anticipated the situation before it happened. So he was absolutely on top of it a prevented a riot.

The pitch at Jones was a nothing pitch at the knees...but the situation was unstable. Most likely the veterans on the Braves bench saw it also, that's another reason the situation didn't explode.

i didnt see the game, but sounds like the guy did a great job handling that.

unfortunately umpires are just kind of the scape got for most people. it's something to blame things going badly on. clearly every fan is biased towards their team and half of their bickerings are ridiculous.

it's just one of those unfortunate jobs where you only get noticed if you mess up.

Since umpires are supposed to get the call right in the first place. That's why people get so mad when they make the wrong call. They don't really need to be praised for doing what they're supposed to be doing.

It's their job to get it right! If you mess up one thing at any job you could be fired. These guys are making $365,000 a year. Get it right!
