New Baby Rat Questions?
I just got a little girl rat today. I was wondering how long I should leave her alone to get accustomed to her surroundings before I start playing with her? I would also like to get her another little female rat soon since she is still young but I didn't want 2 that looked alike so I want to go to another pet store, will 2 babies get along from the start? I have her in an aquarium but I will be getting her into a larger cage once she gets a bit bigger so she doesn't slip through the bars, is there anything I can put in the aquarium that would make it more fun for her? Thanks for the answers!

I have 2 dumbo rats, i started socializing the minute i brought them home and they are the mellowest rats in the world. they never bit me or attempted to at any point. i also had 2 female fancy rats one of them which was apparently impregnated before i bought it and i ended up with 2 adult female rats 5 males and 8 female babies and kept them all i "played" with them since the day they were born and they all were extremely tame too. (except one, theres always one. lol)
So, socialize her as soon as you want alot of people say you shouldnt for 2 or 3 days but its better to be the "thing" that is there when they are scared/ ajusting and the one "thing" that stays constant in their life builds a start base bond.

you should have gotten her with a litter mate. now if you get her a friend from somewhere else, you will have to quarintine it for 2 weeks to be sure it is healthy and wont make her sick. i would go back to wherever you got her and buy a litter mate. you will see visible and personality differences to tell them apart. you should leave her be a day or two, than lay your hand in the cage, let her come to you, dont force her because that is traumatic. give her treats, let her lick yogurt off of your fingers, etc.. depending on her personality (shy/outgoing) you can probably hold her within several days or mabye a week or two later. just be calm and give her lots of goodies. one thing that is helpful is to sit in the bathtub with her. she will be in an enclosed space and be able to run around and climb on you and get used to your scent. i hope the aquarium is atleast 20 gallons. put cardboard, chew toys, and most importantly stuff to climb in her tank. and make sure you have a grated lid as rats can jump over 2 feet. and make sure you know all your research and get a large cage for them. here is a great one, you could even put her in right now as the bars are close enough together:

dont put them in anything smaller than that cage, i would advise getting that one because it is an amazing cage.
make sure you know what your doing so your ratties can have the best life. good luck 8]

They recommend 12-24 hours. It's really up to your judgment, when to stray interacting with her.
It depends, really. Learn how to introduce rats. Since they're both female (which you should check YOURSELF, pet stores know nothing), it should be easier than two males.
Try cardboard tubes for her to gnaw on. Hammocks are nice but you probably wouldn't be able to do this in an aquarium. Get a hideaway house, which will help her feel more secure.

Can i just say, be careful with some rats. As they can slip through even the smallest of bars, they have a collapsible skeleton. Make sure you have bars as close together as possible or she will get out.
They like tunnels, little houses, hammocks etc.
