Can I get student loans deferred while in AIT?
I am in the National Guard and I just completed my AA degree and have some student debt from that.
(I was in a weird situation and wasn't eligible for Tuition Assistance/ Student Loan Repayment)
I am reclassing to another MOS that will entail about 18 months of AIT. Is there a method to getting my Student Loans deferred until I am done with AIT?
Thanks for any help.
I was hoping other Soldiers have been through similar situations and could help me with this problem.
Also, I plan on getting my Bachelor's when I return from AIT (thus deferring my loans until I complete it). If I can get it deferred until 2015, Student Loan Repayment would be available in my re-enlistment contract.

I am not 100% sure that the same rules apply to National Guard or Reserve, but I do know that active duty military are eligible to defer their student loans. What you need to do is go to the website of the people who own your loan and there will be paperwork to print off and fill out, then you fax or mail that along with a copy of proof of military service (that will depend on the company, one might want a copy of your contract, or your id, it would just depend), send them to the company and they will defer your loans for either a set number of years or for the duration of your contract. Call the company that owns your loans about their specific policies. I hope this helped.

It may be possible but like someone else said that is between you and the bank depending on the terms of your loans. I think I had my loans deferred while I was on active duty and my student loan repayment paid them off before I got out.

Thats between you and the bank.
The military has nothing to do with it.
2. Actually while on active duty at AIT, that would be the best time to pay the student loans down.
