Yes Indiana is a pay 2 stay prison. They are charged for their time in jail which I think is really dumb because u would think that would just be able 2 get out of going 2 jail simply because they cannot pay. I do however think its a good idea because that takes the burden off of us 2 care for repeat offenders and child molesters. There is a rehab center for sex offenders and the place is immaculate like 2 the point that they have the very best of everything including better health care than most citizens but here's the kicker.... we as tax payers are paying for them 2 have luxuries. They also have pay 2 stay prisons that were converted 2 hotels but the guests still sleep in cells which I think its really strange and I don't know who would want 2 do that... seems like prison is just some big joke 2 most people. It costs more than 38 million dollars 2 run a prison with 800,000 inmates.Which as u know is any states major budget issues. The inmate has 2 pay $60 per day 2 stay there. They also have 2 pay for their own healthcare and medicines while in prison which makes up some of the costs. Inmates are required 2 pay $15 for each doctor visit and $5 for each nurse sick call visit or prescription visit. Inmates are charged any past due medical bills they incurred because they have 2 see the prisoner regardless of their ability 2 pay. Everything charged is on a sliding scale and all inmates must work at the prison in some way or another 2 pay their daily expenses.

In the US prisons are privately owned by people and corporations, not the government. Therefore, any regulations (even those imposed by the government) are greatly influenced by the owner of the prison. It could have been just a one time instance where the owner of this specific prison tried to charge inmates a fee, but technically that would basically be fraud. The prisons are paid for each inmate through taxes and so charging for each inmate a second time would be like charging someone rent twice for the same month.

a few have them that is why the inmates work in the prison, and get such a low wage. my brother in lock up gets 50 cents an hour for working in laundry.. the 'rest' goes for room and board.
