Putting the "Royal" back in the Canadian Navy and "Air Force?

According to today's news the Government of Canada has directed that Canada's Navy and Air Force will officially revert to "Royal Canadian Navy" and "Royal Canadian Air Force". Good idea? Bad idea?

Considering that Canada doesn't have a "Navy" or an "Air Force" - it's quite a radical shift. They've had a "purple" force of combined operations for years. They are the "Canadian Forces". Are they, perhaps, going to the "Royal Canadian Forces"?

All Canadian military members go through Basic Training together, then off to their individual schools to be mariners, soldiers or aviators - and all leadership schools are taught to all hands as if they were (and are) part of one organization.

It's a great way to do things - but with the egos in the US, I don't see it happening. Even the US Air Force think they have a long history... and there are still many people alive before the Air Force existed.

I think it's a good move for Canada - if it's just to put a "Royal" tag in front of the "Canadian Forces".

Source(s): I recently retired from the US military - and served a tour with a good friend who was in the Canadian Forces.

I'm not Canadian, but I think it sounds good!
