If being "Social" is going to church services, and "Socializing" is hanging out and talking afterwards, Why?
And I mean this. Why when one adds the "ISM" to the end of this word meaning a group of people, and sharing a common interest, become some screwy form of Government?
And think about this. If "Socializing" is a church quilting circle, doesn't that make everyone present or a member of said group, a Socialist?
Also, according to everything I have ever been taught about adding this suffix to any word. Isn't anyone who buy's stock in a publicly traded company, again a group of people with the same goal, making a profit off their investment, practicing Socialism?
After all, "Heroism" doesn't mean running away and burying ones head in the sand.
Phillip, the "Elitist Despot's" are the Aristocrats (know the meaning of That Word?) who run this country and your comprehension is dismal to say the least
Stereoty, We live in a Society, root word Social, Get a fricking Clue. Everything we do as a community or group according to Logic, is Socialism!
Again, a Hero is one who does Heroic deed's. Hence forth it's Heroism.
So who is the Aristocratic puke that so radically changed this?
Lever, 100% correct. My question is Why is this the Only word in the English language that has it's meaning so radically altered?
And Society Does decide which products and services we want. Those we don't go the way of the rotary phones.
Frank, Think outside the crap you have been taught (BS'd) as fact.
Clitoldus, you started off good but then Lose It! Slavery is the Ultimate Labor pool of the Capitalist! Why take a loss in paying someone to do a job when Slave's do it for Free! And we won't talk about Slave Light. aka "Indentured Servitude!
Kathy, I am Sober, you however appear to be Drunk on the cool-aid provided by Aristocrats.

I got a big kick out of your refraiming the word Socialism. Its very creative., and you might be able to
convince these cons that the word Socialism is perfectly acceptable because it describes them to a T.
However I doubt that they would accept Socialism as describing them, because they have become like Pavlovian dogs trained to hate words such as Socialist or Liberal.I suspect they would be very offended by the new name, as I can see from some of the responses to your question
Hope this helps

Words can have multiplie meanings. In the dictionary, each number that is listed represents a separate and different meaning for that same word.
Socialism has nothing to do with the definitions that you're using for the words "social (adjective or noun)" or "socialize (which has many meanings)."
--
EDIT:
Every language has words that are like this. In Spanish and French there are some words that can be used in 40 or 50 different contexts with separate meanings.
English has numerous definitions for almost all common words. There's nothing unusual. The term socialism was popularized by Karl Marx, so that's where the term gained this meaning. Socialism is alluding to the term "society" I believe, rather than the more modern definitions of "socializing" that you're giving.
The meanings that words take on are random, at least. The word socialism didn't even exist before the 1800's, so obviously, the word socialism has nothing to do with the older uses for the word "social" or "society" or "socialize." The economic theorists decided to name their economic system socialism and that's why it's socialism. If it were named something else, we wouldn't even be talking about this.
This might seem strange since in many languages that are non-European, they might not realize that words with that come from the root word "social" is a common word. In Japanese for example, they have their own words for "social" and "society," so to them the word "socialism" sounds like its own distinct thing, when in reality it's a common phase in English. They only have the word "socialism" in their own vocabulary and it has a specific meaning.
What I'm saying is, there's nothing out of the ordinary about the different meanings that sound similar to "social."

Being Social is a choice.
I don't expect you are capable of understanding the difference when the addition if ISM changes the meaning to Mandated Equalism at the cost of Human Dignity and the Elimination of Choice coupled with the Destruction of the fruits of your personal efforts for the purpose of satisfying the Power Cravings of the Elitist Despots in charge.

When the Holy Spirit interacts with His persons, we react in specific methods. Some stand in silence, whilst others cry out in compliment. Some fall prostrate in worship, and sure, a few even cry. Let the Holy Spirit transfer in you. Don't fear what others might feel. This is a short-term connection among you and the Holy Spirit. May God's advantages pour over you.

We as a culture have determined to abandon truth. The failure of objectivity in science has led to value relativism, because if we all are here by chance then all values are relative. That of course has resulted in the reduction of human dignity, it has resulted in the moral decay of our society. It has led to the fallacies of Marxism and socialism, which it has as it's goal, subjugation, slavery, and bondage in all the nations across the world and is actively pursuing this country.
That derives from the misconceptions that have been perpetrated on our society, through a non-objective science, ill guided educational policies, and lack of diligence on the part of you and I.

because the -ism part changes the word from hanging out with people to having a government set up to eventually become authoritarian.

Because you cannot hand something to people without taking it off the backs of others. Socialism leads to serious government power and corruption, and if you think that will not happen here in the US, you leave in Naive land.
EDIT: I UNDERSTAND THAT AND IT'S WHY I PAY TAXES. THE PROBLEM I HAVE WITH YOUR TYPE OF SYSTEM IS THAT I WORK DAY AND NIGHT AND YOU DECIDE NOT TO BUT PICK MY POCKET FOR EVERYTHING YOU WANT. COME TO NY STATE AND SEE FOR YOURSELF. WE HAVE 30% POVERTY IN EVERY UPSTATE CITY BECAUSE GOVERNMENT TAXES BUSINESS TO DEATH, AND THEN DECIDES TO GIVE BREAKS TO THEIR CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTORS. GET A CLUE!

No socialism is different. Just because you ad an ism to the end of something doesn't mean that that it means the same thing.

I'm sure this seems very profound to you now, but I don't think it will make quite so much sense once you sober up.
