What does it mean when a coyote/wolf makes a high pitched howl?

Is it like a war cry or what? I've been hearing a coyote or a wolf (I'm not too sure which one it is) making a high pitched howl for like 3 nights in a row. It drives me crazy! It howls at a certain time of the night and it doesn't sound like the type of howl they'll use when howling at the moon.

It's a way of keeping a wolf pack together. A lost wolf will howl and the others will respond to let it know where the rest of the pack is. I had an afghan that would respond to wolf howls - - or to fire sirens. Not much fun when you were in the car with him at a light and a nearby siren went off.

If it's high pitched and interspersed with yips it is probably a coyote. That's how they communicate. It's calling to other coyotes. Sometimes you'll hear coyotes all over the area get each other going, it's a neat sound.

canines can no longer see shade, there fore there listening to is plenty extra recepitable. It in a nut shell hurts there ears subsequently they start to howl. Like take a siron as an occasion....its LOUD and to drown out the noise a possibility yet extra much less via fact it hurts sorta like a cry to make it end!
