I am reading a history book that says that German concentration camps were found AFTER WWII....?

is this true? Or were they found BEFORE the war ended?

As far as I know all the camps were found before the end of World War 2, perhaps it meant that the camps were not liberated until the official end of the war. In May 1945 the Americans and the Russians were liberating some of the camps.

As a kid during WWII, I remember hearing that it was rumored that the Nazis had concentration camps operating. The then Pope refused to acknowledge that, and refused to use his world political position to confront Germany! I think that had something to do with the Pope still trying to have some influence upon the Nazis, and so kept quiet on that issue! Of course, as the Allies began freeing the countries, the concentration camps were discovered. Full knowledge of the horrors and torturing done by the Nazi came to light.

Some were discovered after WWII ended - effectively the war was over once Berlin fell and Hitler had committed suicide, but there were still pockets of land occupied by the Germans in Western Europe/Germany.

Auschwitz was though liberated by the Russians on January 27, 1945. That day is commemorated as World Holocaust day.

It's worth remembering that 'concentration camp' has acquired a special meaning since the war. Formerly it just meant 'internment camp'.

For example I have a 1939 British magazine that states that any captured Luftwaffe fliers would be put in 'concentration camps'.

Not all concentration camps were extermination camps. My wife's grandfather was put in one for criticizing Hitler and survived - apparently for him it was like being in jail.

I read that they were known about before the end of the war, but for various reasons they didn't act upon it. I think this was a discussion question in one of my college classes..

It had to do with politics mostly.. there was a lot of pressure from the Jewish people in America to do something but no one would step up or at least admit that they were doing anything for Jewish people. :( It's pretty messed up. Anything for a vote!

I would get a hold of a history book written by a Jew. You might get some differing information there. That's the thing about history though.. you really don't know who's telling the truth unless you were directly involved.

You are reading the wrong books!

It must mean that the allies found them after WW2, not that the Nazi's founded them after WW2. Could we have the name of this book please so we can see who it is by etc.

Burn that history book, at least you might get some heat from it, because that's all it is good for.
