A smart phone is more like a portable computer, able to have full applications, open & create documents, read/write files, access the internet, et cetera (along with the obvious making and receiving of phone calls). Smart phones also boast better hardware, faster processing speeds, better graphics and so on and so fourth.

A standard "function" phone, has mini-applications and games but is very limited and is more just for basic phone use like calls, texts, et cetera. Some feature phones are able to access the internet but browsing and internet-enabled app. usage is very watered down and not as full featured as in a smart phone.

    Smartphones are cellphones.

Cellphones tend to get more sophisticated over time, so that today's mid range phones offer more functionality than what would have been more sophisticated phones in the past - like multimeida, text using real keyboards, camera, etc.

Today, smartphone refers to a phone with

a sophisticated operating system (android, ios, symbian), powerful main processor and (at least) 3G connectivity.

Feature phones like the LG Voyager could also play multimedia, take pictures and search the internet - so those aren't signs of a smartphone. Rather the hardware limits on that phone made internet surfing much more impractical, its camera less reliable (an not comparable in terms of pixel count) and its video was limited to 3G2, which was actually okay. It choked on heavier MP4 files.

Smartphones are cellular too. They do more stuff like internet and you can get programs for them that do lots of other things.

A cell phone is simple. It can call people and text and sometimes search the web. Smart phones have the capability to have apps, surf the web, webchat, and much more.

there is not any actual technical distinction between them, different than that telephones that get positioned on the "smart telephone" checklist tend to be greater costly, with larger end hardware, and that they have an inclination to have working structures for which progression kits are greater handy, so as that there are apps to get carry of for them. yet ultimately a "telephone" is merely any telephone that the service has desperate to call a "telephone," widely speaking for billing purposes. Or in different words, so they are able to cost you greater to apply them.
