Zebra Danio being bullied? ?

I recently bought five zebra danios for my five gallon tank. Watching them swim around yesterday, I noted one was hiding behind the filter. When I coaxed him out with food, it looked like his tail had been bitten off. One of the other danios is a bully and chases the others around, so I'm assuming that he's the one who did this. What should I do with the fish with the missing tail? I don't have another tank with a filter, nor do I have the money for one-should I put him in a bowl of his own so his tail can recover? Should I buy him a buddy fish? I've read that even numbers are good so that they all have a partner. If I do put him in a separate bowl, should I only keep him there until his tail grows back or should he be separate forever? I know that pretty much everyone thinks keeping a fish in a bowl is cruel but I really don't have any other options.

Update:

I did a LOT of research on Zebra danios, and have had some for almost five years before they died of old age. I am well aware that most owners believe they should have at least 20 gallons, but I went to a respectable breeder and he said 5 gallons would be just fine. I wish I had the money to go out and buy a 20 gallon tank, but that's just not going to happen any time soon. I am not asking about how much space they need, I am trying to help one of the fish who is being bullied. I didn't come here to be lectured about how much space they need because there is nothing I can do to change it now.

You should return them all. Zebra Danio's need 20G minimum. Not 5G. Upgrade or give away.

Keep the water clean. Maybe add some aquarium salt to help prevent infections. They are most likely creating a 'pecking order', or choosing who is the dominate danio in the tank.

You could also let it heal on it's own. It will heal.

Stress coat with aloe is also a good thing. It is a water conditioner, but the aloe helps with nips.

But seriously, those fish need a bigger tank. And 6 per group minimum. Did you do research on them? You should have. Taking a living animal into your care and not researching anything on it is foolish. If you DID research and know their needs, such as tank size, and put them in there anyway, that is worse then not researching IMO.

But it is time for an upgraded tank.

I even have 2 zebra danio's and that they constantly chasing one yet another, I used to have 4 (2 died) and that all of them used to stick to and chase one yet another. I had a topic with my zebra danio's as quickly as I further colourful long finned guppies to my tank, each and all the guppies died through fact of shredded tails in the 1st week. i think it became the Zebra Danio's that mistook their tails for foodstuff, I even have at the instant stumbled on a suited combination for my 70L freshwater tank, 2x corydoras (backside feeders) 4x Platies (hardy fish) 4x purple phantom tetras (shoalers) plus my zebras. good success!
