How is this NOT racist?
A post a few moments ago could not see any racism in Darwin's thinking.
"At some future period, not very distant as measured by centuries, the civilised races of man will almost certainly exterminate and replace throughout the world the savage races. At the same time the anthropomorphous apes, as Professor Schaaffhausen has remarked, will no doubt be exterminated. The break will then be rendered wider, for it will intervene between man in a more civilised state, as we may hope, than the Caucasian, and some ape as low as a baboon, instead of as at present between the ***** or Australian and the gorilla." Darwin, Charles. 1871. The Descent of Man, London: John Murray. Volume. 1. 1st edition. p 201
Does anyone else agree? I would befascinated (and disturbed) for someone to defend this......

Many people who believe in evolution seem to dismiss Darwin's racist comments, which makes me wonder if his theory of evolution is even true.

It was, unfortunately, a common prejudice at the time that the Caucasian race was the most advanced on Planet Earth. This gave rise to the Eugenics movement which believed that some humans were superior to others. Some took this to a racist level: the KKK, and a funny little man in Germany who birthed the National Socialist movement, and others. Others believed men were naturally superior to women hence women should not be in positions of authority, still others thought we should exterminate the mentally ill or mentally retarded as they were a drain on the gene pool of the superior ones. But mostly a man name Herbert Spencer promulgated something which came to be known as Social Darwinism which, in short, believed that any attempt to aid the less fortunate was ultimately doomed to failure as all you were doing was extending the life of the genetically inferior and the sooner they die off, the better for the remaining superior ones.
That philosophy followed to its conclusion is social fascism. Defined as: The strong have a duty to survive over the inferior (fill in desired group here). Then this new superior group will create a new, clean and vibrant humanity free from the inferior traits of the past. One lasting remnant of that era, but explained in a totally different way today, marriage licenses. They were designed to prevent mogrelization of the superior White race with inferior races thereby dragging its superior characteristics down to a lower level. Sieg Heil!

Yes, it was racist. Darwin, despite his intelligence, was a product of his time.
However, I think you also missed the point: notice the part where he thinks humans will become "...more civilised..." than the Caucasian? The point was that humans would continue to evolve. Yes, he was incorrect in thinking there are human "races" at all, and that the "Caucasian race" was the best of all. We've learned a lot since then.
Peace.

So he's saying that the Caucasian is better than the Australian, and a gorilla is better than the baboon.
Also is he calling the "savage races" anthropomorphous apes? So instead of calling them humans, he's calling them humanoid apes.

he was a person of his time and such ideas were typical
If I read that correctly he is predicting the extinction by loss of habitat and culture of some of the less advanced societies o fman and some speices of primates.
which is just what is happening.
notice " more civilized then the (present) Caucasian ( northern and central european)
watch the current Nova shows about the mid and emoutions fo the primates and what distinguishes them from homo sapiens.
small but crucial mental abilities

Totally racist. Yet I always get thumbs-downed into obscurity whenever I point out that Darwin was a racist. I mean, it's understandable; he was a product of his time. And his time was racist.

The clinical definition of Caucasian does not mean what you think it means. Caucasians are not necessarily white.

evolution is not always politically correct. Sometimes the best organism wins, sometimes it doesn't.
