How do you "undo" an exponent?

I'm almost embarrassed to ask this question, but because of a Summer without school and Statistics a couple of years behind me, I forget how to "undo" an exponent. For example, the problem I have is:

P^3 = 64.

I know the answer is 4, but how do you get to that answer without "guess and check"?

Thank you for the help in advance.

    P^3 = 64

    P = 64^(1/3)

    P = 4

    or

    P^3 = 64

    P^3 = 4^3

    P = 4

    You need to take the cuberoot of 64.

    To calculate the root put 1 over the exponent. (1/exponent)

    P^3=64 then 64^(1/3) = 4

    Basically you should write the number with the same power:

    P^3 = 4^3, then if the exponents are equal, you can equal P=4.

    For anyone else looking for the answer to a similar problem more likely than not you would need to use a logarithm or log, which can be done on most graphing calculators

    You take the cubic root of the equation.
